Coming into the weekend, Verstappen led the Drivers' Championship by 125 points over his Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez, with Fernando Alonso a further 40 points back in third. Red Bull Racing dominated the Constructors' Championship, leading Mercedes by 256 points. The race was held across the weekend of 25β27 August.
The entry list carried one notable change: Daniel Ricciardo, who had replaced Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri from the Hungarian Grand Prix, suffered a broken metacarpal bone in his left hand following a crash during the second free practice session. Reserve driver Liam Lawson was called up to replace Ricciardo for the remainder of the weekend, making his Formula One race debut. Robert Shwartzman drove for Ferrari in place of Carlos Sainz Jr. during the first practice session. Tyre supplier Pirelli provided the C1, C2, and C3 compounds β hard, medium, and soft respectively β for the event.
Verstappen topped the first free practice session ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. The second session was topped by Lando Norris, but was red-flagged when Oscar Piastri and Ricciardo crashed at turn 3 in separate incidents moments apart β it was Ricciardo's accident that resulted in his metacarpal fracture and ended his weekend. The third session, held in wet conditions, was also red-flagged three times for Kevin Magnussen's crash and separate spins by Zhou Guanyu and Lawson, with Verstappen topping the session ahead of George Russell and Perez.
Qualifying took place on 26 August. Yuki Tsunoda received a three-place grid penalty for impeding Lewis Hamilton in Q2. Kevin Magnussen, who qualified 18th, was required to start from the pit lane after new elements were changed without approval of the technical delegate during parc ferme conditions.
The race was held on 27 August and was significantly affected by wet weather. Verstappen won from pole, claiming his ninth successive victory and equalling Sebastian Vettel's record for consecutive Formula One race wins. Alonso finished second for Aston Martin and also set his first fastest lap since the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix. Pierre Gasly crossed the line third for Alpine β his first podium since the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix and his first as an Alpine driver β after Perez was handed a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, dropping the Mexican from third to fourth.
Heavy rainfall and a crash by Zhou Guanyu eight laps before the scheduled conclusion forced a race suspension of approximately 45 minutes before the event resumed and was run to completion. Yuki Tsunoda received an additional five-second penalty for causing a collision with George Russell, and Magnussen received a post-race five-second time penalty for falling more than ten car lengths behind the safety car.
Verstappen's ninth consecutive win matched the record Vettel had set during his dominant 2013 season. The race also marked Liam Lawson's Formula One debut under difficult circumstances, with the New Zealander adapting to a car and circuit he had not driven in race conditions before.
