The Azerbaijan Grand Prix has historically been held on a Sunday, consistent with the standard Formula One weekend structure. For 2026, a formal request from the promoter and relevant government authorities led the FIA to move the race day to a Saturday, making it one of the distinctive calendar curiosities of the season. This is a logistical accommodation rather than a sporting change; the event still forms a full round of the championship and awards points under the standard system.
The 2026 season marks the most significant technical overhaul in Formula One since 2014. New power unit regulations retain the turbocharged 1.6-litre V6 internal combustion engine but remove the MGU-H (Motor Generator Unit - Heat) that has operated alongside the hybrid system since 2014. The MGU-K (Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic) output is increased substantially, from 160 bhp (120 kW) to 470 bhp (350 kW), while the combustion engine's contribution decreases from approximately 850 bhp (630 kW) to around 540 bhp (400 kW). The power units use a fully sustainable fuel and are designed to recover twice as much electrical energy as the previous generation.
Alongside the power unit changes, active aerodynamics replace the Drag Reduction System that had operated since 2011. An overtake mode, which can be activated when a pursuing driver is within one second of the car ahead, takes the place of DRS. The new cars are narrower (190 cm versus the previous 200 cm), shorter in wheelbase (340 cm versus 360 cm), and lighter by 30 kg.
Financial regulations were also substantially revised for 2026, with the team operational cost cap rising from 135 million to 215 million US dollars, reflecting inflation adjustments and the inclusion of previously exempted cost categories.
The 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix grid features eleven constructors, the most since 2016. Cadillac makes its Formula One debut in 2026 as the eleventh team, using Ferrari power units, while Audi competes for the first time as a full works outfit after acquiring Sauber in 2024. Three new engine suppliers joined the sport: Audi with its own unit, Honda through its Honda Racing Corporation subsidiary supplying Aston Martin, and Ford through a partnership with Red Bull Powertrains supplying Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. Alpine switched from Renault to Mercedes customer power units, ending Renault's role as an engine supplier for the first time since 2000.
The entry list for the event includes McLaren-Mercedes with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, Mercedes with George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, Ferrari with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton, Red Bull Racing with Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar, Aston Martin-Honda with Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, Alpine-Mercedes with Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, Haas-Ferrari with Esteban Ocon and Oliver Bearman, Racing Bulls-Ford with Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad, Audi with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto, Williams-Mercedes with Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz Jr., and Cadillac-Ferrari with Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas.
Isack Hadjar joined Red Bull Racing for 2026, replacing Yuki Tsunoda, who moved to a test and reserve role. Hadjar's seat at Racing Bulls was taken by Arvid Lindblad, promoted from Formula 2. Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas both returned to the grid with Cadillac; Perez's Red Bull contract had been terminated by mutual agreement at the end of 2024, while Bottas had served as a Mercedes reserve driver in 2025 after his time with Sauber.
Through the rounds preceding Baku, Kimi Antonelli emerged as a dominant force in the early 2026 season. The Italian driver won four consecutive Grands Prix — China, Japan, Miami, and Canada — and converted his first three consecutive pole positions into victories, a feat no driver had achieved before. Antonelli also became the youngest winner of the Monaco Grand Prix and the youngest to achieve a grand chelem (pole, fastest lap, lead every lap, victory) in the championship's history. His run of wins placed him at the head of the Drivers' Championship.
George Russell and Lewis Hamilton provided competitive opposition, with Russell winning the season-opening Australian Grand Prix and Hamilton taking his first victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix. Hamilton's win produced the first all-British Formula One podium since the 1968 United States Grand Prix, alongside Russell in second and Lando Norris in third. The Constructors' Championship standings reflected Mercedes' strong form alongside Ferrari's consistency, while McLaren, Red Bull, and Alpine also scored points across the opening rounds.
The 2026 sporting regulations introduce several notable changes. Stewards may now initiate a review based on new evidence without requiring a competitor's formal right of review request, and an out-of-competition stewards panel handles time-sensitive decisions between events. Drivers are permitted to change their permanent race numbers during their careers with FIA approval. Driver cooling vests are now mandatory whenever the FIA declares a heat hazard, having previously been optional. Teams must also ensure that at least 55 percent of their car's surface area, when viewed from the side and above, is covered by painted or stickered livery, a rule introduced to discourage teams from leaving large areas of exposed carbon fibre to reduce weight.
