The Shanghai International Circuit hosted the Chinese Grand Prix for the 19th time in its history across the weekend of 13 to 15 March 2026. The race was the 19th running of the Chinese Grand Prix as a world championship round. The event was also notable as the 1,000th entry in McLaren's history as a Formula One constructor.
Going into the weekend, George Russell led the Drivers' Championship with 25 points following the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, seven ahead of his Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in second and ten clear of Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in third. Mercedes led the Constructors' Championship on 43 points, with Ferrari second on 27 and McLaren third on 10.
Pirelli brought the C2, C3, and C4 compounds to Shanghai, designated hard, medium, and soft respectively.
Sprint qualifying on Friday 13 March was topped by George Russell, with Antonelli alongside him and Lando Norris of McLaren in third. Lewis Hamilton and Oscar Piastri completed the top five. The session featured three segments following the standard sprint qualifying format: SQ1 and SQ2 on new medium tyres, with SQ3 on softs. Among those eliminated early were both Williams drivers Carlos Sainz Jr. and Alexander Albon, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, and the Cadillac pairing of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez. Albon was required to start the sprint from the pit lane after modifications to his car under parc ferme conditions, and Perez failed to set a lap time in sprint qualifying.
The sprint ran over 19 laps on 14 March.
Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday 14 March produced a historic result. Kimi Antonelli, 19 years old, claimed pole position for the main race. In doing so he became the youngest Formula One polesitter in history, breaking the record previously set by Sebastian Vettel at the 2008 Italian Grand Prix when Vettel was 21. Antonelli's achievement was part of an extraordinary weekend for the young Italian.
The race took place on Sunday 15 March over 56 laps. Before the start, four drivers failed to take the grid: Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri both suffered power unit problems, while Gabriel Bortoleto and Alexander Albon were unable to start due to hydraulic failures.
Starting from pole position, Antonelli converted his front-row start into a maiden Formula One Grand Prix victory, leading home a Mercedes one-two with championship leader Russell finishing second. Hamilton, in his first season with Ferrari, completed the podium in third place after a race-long battle with teammate Charles Leclerc.
Antonelli's victory carried multiple historical distinctions. It was the first win by an Italian driver in Formula One since Giancarlo Fisichella won the 2006 Malaysian Grand Prix. Antonelli also became the second-youngest race winner in Formula One history and, with his pole position and sprint victory, the youngest driver to secure a hat trick across a single race weekend.
The 2026 Chinese Grand Prix established Antonelli as a genuine championship contender from the earliest rounds of the season, despite Russell retaining the points lead after China. The race also marked the beginning of what would become a long stretch of form for Antonelli, who by the Canadian Grand Prix two months later had extended his championship lead to 20 points. For Hamilton, the podium at Shanghai represented his first top-three finish in a full Grand Prix for Ferrari, a significant early validation of his high-profile switch from Mercedes.
