The 2026 season introduced the most comprehensive technical overhaul in over a decade. Power units retain the 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 configuration but eliminate the MGU-H system entirely while substantially increasing MGU-K output to 470 bhp. Internal combustion output is set at approximately 540 bhp, giving a combined power figure that increases the proportion of electrical energy to roughly equal the combustion contribution. New active aerodynamics replace the previous drag reduction system, operating via a manual override overtake mode. Car dimensions were reduced and downforce levels cut by approximately 15 percent compared to the previous generation. The financial cost cap increased from $135 million to $215 million to account for inflation and the engineering demands of the new technical regulations.
The 2026 grid expanded to eleven constructors for the first time since 2016. Cadillac entered as an all-new constructor, initially running Ferrari power units, with Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas as its drivers. Audi entered as a works team after completing its acquisition of Sauber in 2024, fielding its own power unit. Ford returned to the sport as an engine partner for the first time since 2004, supporting Red Bull Powertrains in supplying power units to Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls. Honda Racing Corporation established an exclusive works partnership with Aston Martin, supplying a dedicated power unit after ending its long association with Red Bull Racing. Alpine switched from Renault to Mercedes power units, ending Renault's participation as an engine supplier.
Isack Hadjar replaced Yuki Tsunoda at Red Bull Racing, with Tsunoda moving to Racing Bulls. Arvid Lindblad joined the grid as a rookie with Racing Bulls. Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas, both without seats at the end of 2025, returned to competition with Cadillac.
