At the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Honda announced the GT3 version of the NSX for competition from 2017. The car's base is the second-generation NSX (NC1), a rear mid-engine hybrid sports car produced in Marysville, Ohio from 2016. The production NSX uses a 3,493 cc twin-turbocharged 75-degree DOHC V6 producing 500 hp and three electric motors for a combined system output of 573 hp. For the GT3 application, the V6 is carried over in what Honda described as "virtually bone-stock form" โ an approach enabled by the road engine's robust specification, and distinct from most GT3 programmes that develop bespoke race units.
The original NSX GT3 debuted in 2017. Honda introduced an upgraded Evo variant for 2019, featuring improved aerodynamics and cooling plus new turbochargers โ components that were subsequently adapted for the 2022 NSX Type S road car's performance enhancement package. A further upgrade, the NSX GT3 Evo22, was introduced for 2022 with upgraded intercoolers, re-tuned suspension, new wheel system revisions, optional headlight configurations, FIA-mandated rain lights and an air conditioning system. Production of the Evo22 was handled by JAS Motorsport using chassis resources from the Marysville plant.
In its debut season of 2017, the NSX GT3 scored its first IMSA SportsCar Championship GTD class victory at Belle Isle, followed by another win at the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen. It also won a round of the Pirelli World Challenge.
The 2019 NSX GT3 Evo proved significantly more successful. The car won the 2019 IMSA SportsCar Championship GTD drivers' and teams' titles. In parallel, it won the Super GT GT300 class drivers' and teams' titles. In the SRO GT World Challenge America it won Pro-Am drivers' and teams' championships. The Evo successfully defended its IMSA GTD titles in 2020, winning back-to-back drivers' and teams' championships and also the manufacturers' championship โ the first car to achieve that in consecutive seasons under the revised IMSA structure. In the GT World Challenge America, the Evo won overall manufacturers', drivers' and teams' titles in 2020. In the Intercontinental GT Challenge the car scored two pole positions, a podium at the 2020 Indianapolis 8 Hours, and dominated the 2020 Kyalami 9 Hours until heavy rain reshuffled the order in the final hour.
The NSX GT3 Evo22 continued the line's competitiveness into 2022 and 2023. Gradient Racing won the 2022 Petit Le Mans overall among all GT entries with the Evo22. In the 2022 GT World Challenge America, Racers Edge Motorsports won the Pro-Am championship with drivers Mario Farnbacher and Ashton Harrison, posting four race wins, four poles and eight podiums. During the 2022 Le Mans Cup season, GMB Motorsport took five victories including the Road to Le Mans, winning the drivers' and teams' championships. In Super GT between 2022 and 2023, ARTA and Team UpGarage combined for four victories in the GT300 class.
Honda ceased factory support for the NSX GT3 at the end of 2024. JAS Motorsport committed to continuing support for existing cars competing in Europe. In 2025, JAS Motorsport and Nova Race developed a further evolution under national GT3 homologation designated the Evo25, racing in the Italian GT Championship.
The NSX GT3 programme demonstrated that a hybrid road car's production engine could form the basis of a competitive GT3 race car without extensive reworking, a point Honda repeatedly highlighted in comparing the GT3 specification to its competitors' approach. The programme's breadth โ spanning IMSA, Super GT, the SRO ecosystem and the Intercontinental GT Challenge across multiple continents โ established the second-generation NSX as one of the most decorated GT3 platforms of its era before the model's production ended in 2022.
