Based in Faenza, Italy, the team has always operated as Red Bull's development programme, cycling young drivers through the car before potential promotion to [[red-bull-racing|Red Bull Racing]]. An aerodynamics facility in Bicester, UK supplemented the Italian base. Franz Tost served as team principal throughout the entire AlphaTauri era. The rebrand from Toro Rosso was announced ahead of the 2020 season, with a new livery that made the fashion tie-in explicit. Red Bull's own leadership acknowledged at the time that the transition also reflected the team's evolution from junior squad to sister team.
The team name takes its astronomical reference from Aldebaran — the star formally designated Alpha Tauri, the brightest in the constellation Taurus — giving the squad a distinct brand identity that could be marketed independently while remaining within the same corporate structure.
The four-season AlphaTauri chapter produced 309 championship points. Its single race victory came early and dramatically: Pierre Gasly won the 2020 Italian Grand Prix at Monza in chaotic circumstances following a safety car restart late in the race. It was the first Formula One victory for a French driver since Olivier Panis at the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix, and it established Gasly's position in the sport. The team's best constructors' championship finish across the four years was sixth place, achieved in 2021.
Engine supply shifted over the four seasons. Honda powered the team in 2020 and 2021, the same power unit used by [[red-bull-racing|Red Bull Racing]]. When Honda formally withdrew from Formula One at the end of 2021, Red Bull Powertrains took over the intellectual property and continued supplying rebadged units for 2022 and 2023.
Key drivers across the AlphaTauri seasons included Gasly, Daniil Kvyat, and Yuki Tsunoda, the latter joining in 2021 and remaining with the programme through its subsequent rebrand.
Earlier graduates through the Faenza-based team had included Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. The AlphaTauri era saw a more selective approach, with Gasly sent back from [[red-bull-racing|Red Bull Racing]] to Toro Rosso mid-2019 — a demotion that ultimately reset his career on a productive path — and Tsunoda building toward a longer-term role rather than acting as a transitional fixture.
Following the 2023 season, Red Bull rebranded the team in partnership with Visa and Cash App as commercial title sponsors. The squad now competes as Visa Cash App RB, informally abbreviated to RB or VCARB. The Faenza base and Italian identity of the operation remain intact.
