Miami's motorsport history predates the Formula One era. In the early 1980s local promoter Ralph Sanchez proposed a hybrid street and permanent circuit in Bayfront Park to the Formula One rights holder, but the plan did not proceed. IMSA sportscar racing used a Bayfront Park layout from 1983 for approximately three years, then moved to Bicentennial Park in 1986. IndyCar and CART events were held at Tamiami Park, Bicentennial Park, and the Homestead-Miami oval at various points between the mid-1980s and 2010.
A formal Formula One proposal centred on PortMiami was submitted in 2018 for a projected 2019 debut, but construction complications ended that plan. A new proposal focused on Hard Rock Stadium was developed from 2019 onward by Stephen M. Ross, the stadium's owner. The race was formally announced in April 2021 for the 2022 calendar. The original announcement had missed the 2021 calendar; that season opened instead with the new Saudi Arabian Grand Prix. The Miami International Autodrome opened for its first session on 8 May 2022.
The Miami International Autodrome was designed by Apex Circuit Design. The track measures 5.412 km in length and runs for 57 laps per Grand Prix, covering 308.326 km. It was built on the parking areas and surrounding land of Hard Rock Stadium using permanent-style kerbing and asphalt, with temporary barriers and fencing installed for each event weekend and removed afterward. The circuit opened on 7 May 2022.
Max Verstappen won the first two editions of the race in 2022 and 2023 for Red Bull Racing. Lando Norris won for McLaren in 2024 and Oscar Piastri for McLaren in 2025. Kimi Antonelli won in 2026 for Mercedes. As of 2026, the most wins by a driver belongs to Verstappen with two; the most constructors' wins are shared by Red Bull and McLaren with two each; the most wins by engine supplier belong to Mercedes with three.
The 2026 Miami Grand Prix, held on 3 May 2026 as the fourth round of the season under the full title Formula 1 Crypto.com Miami Grand Prix 2026, was framed by unusual circumstances. The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix had been cancelled due to the 2026 Iran war, and the gap was used to introduce changes to power unit regulations; the opening free practice session was extended from 60 to 90 minutes to compensate. Antonelli arrived leading the Drivers' Championship with 72 points, nine ahead of George Russell and 23 ahead of Charles Leclerc. Mercedes led the Constructors' Championship on 135 points, 45 ahead of Ferrari and 90 ahead of McLaren.
In the sprint race, Norris beat Piastri and Leclerc; Antonelli was penalised to sixth following a post-race investigation. Qualifying saw Antonelli take pole with a lap of 1:27.798, ahead of Verstappen and Leclerc; Isack Hadjar was disqualified from his grid position.
The race start time was brought forward from 16:00 to 13:00 local time due to a rainstorm forecast. At the race start Leclerc ran wide and promoted himself to second; Verstappen hit a kerb early and fell back. A safety car was deployed on lap five following separate incidents — Hadjar struck the barriers at turn fourteen and Gabriel Bortoleto hit Gasly at turn seventeen, sending Gasly into the barriers and out of the race. Lawson and Hülkenberg also retired.
During and after the pit stop sequence, Antonelli and Norris moved past Verstappen. From lap 30 Norris closed steadily on Antonelli over 15 laps without being able to pass. On lap 47 Leclerc passed Verstappen for third; Piastri passed Leclerc on the penultimate lap. In the final laps Leclerc spun and made contact with the barrier, dropping to sixth behind Russell and Verstappen.
Antonelli won in 1:33:19.273, his third consecutive Formula One victory. Norris finished 3.264 seconds behind; Piastri was 27.092 seconds adrift in third. Russell placed fourth, Verstappen fifth, and Leclerc sixth. Norris set the fastest lap of the race on lap 35 with a time of 1:31.869.
