Moffitt was born to Brian Moffitt and Rebecca Petty-Moffitt, the youngest daughter of Richard Petty. Despite the famous lineage, Moffitt has noted that older family members preferred he develop independently, offering advice only when asked. He attended Wheatmore High School before switching to online schooling to accommodate his racing schedule. In his youth, Moffitt played football and other organized sports before turning to go-kart racing in his mid-teens.
Moffitt is not related to fellow NASCAR competitor Brett Moffitt despite the shared surname.
Moffitt began go-kart racing at age fourteen and progressed through quarter midgets and limited late models, competing at tracks including Caraway Speedway and Ace Speedway. He became the 2016 Southeast Limited Late Model champion and recorded his first late model win that same year.
In 2019, he traveled to England to drive a 1981 edition of his grandfather Richard Petty's racecar at the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Moffitt made his ARCA Racing Series debut in April 2017 at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway, driving a car styled to evoke one of his grandfather's machines for Empire Racing, a satellite team of Richard Petty Motorsports. He ran three races in 2017, posting a best finish of eleventh at Lucas Oil Raceway.
Through 2018, Moffitt competed in additional ARCA events, including races at Salem Speedway and Toledo Speedway. At Toledo he rebounded from a mid-race spin to claim a tenth-place finish, his first top ten in the series.
In January 2020, Moffitt joined DGR-Crosley for the season-opening race at Daytona and continued on a partial schedule throughout the year. He recorded three top-five finishes across thirteen races, with a career-best fourth-place result at Memphis.
In 2021, Moffitt returned to ARCA with the renamed David Gilliland Racing for most of the season. His year included a controversial incident at Michigan International Speedway, where his retaliation attempt against Drew Dollar resulted in a crash that injured Tim Richmond.
In January 2025, Moffitt announced a full-time return to ARCA with Nitro Motorsports, though by June of that year he had scaled back to a part-time role to allow room for Treyten Lapcevich.
Moffitt made his Camping World Truck Series debut at Daytona in February 2022 for Reaume Brothers Racing in collaboration with GMS Racing, with a paint scheme paying tribute to Richard Petty's 1992 retirement season.
In December 2023, he was announced as the full-time driver for Faction46, running the No. 46 Chevrolet for the 2024 season. The campaign was disrupted in June 2024 when Moffitt suffered a medical emergency prior to the race at Nashville Superspeedway, requiring a substitute driver. The team shut down entirely in July 2024 due to financial constraints. Moffitt subsequently joined Young's Motorsports to drive the No. 46 at Pocono and for the remainder of the 2024 season, though funding shortfalls again limited his appearances toward the end of the year. He finished the season 32nd in points.
In 2023, Moffitt contested the full Trans Am Series schedule in the No. 43 Chevrolet for TeamSLR, competing in the TA2 class with support from Petty's Garage. He earned six top-ten finishes, including a second-place result at the Detroit Street Circuit, and finished seventh in the TA2 class standings.
