Argentine motorcycle Grand Prix

The Argentine motorcycle Grand Prix — formally known between 2014 and 2023 as the Argentine Republic motorcycle Grand Prix — is a round of the FIM MotoGP World Championship held at the Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo in Santiago del Estero province, northern Argentina. After fifteen years without Grand Prix motorcycle racing in Argentina, the event was revived in 2014 at Termas de Río Hondo, a purpose-built circuit that had undergone a complete overhaul in 2012. The race established itself as a popular stop on the calendar, though it has faced scheduling disruptions in the 2020s linked to the country's economic situation and circuit logistics.

The Autódromo Termas de Río Hondo is located in the spa town of Termas de Río Hondo, roughly 1,100 km north of Buenos Aires. The circuit measures 4.805 km in length and was originally opened in 2008, before undergoing a comprehensive redesign and rebuild completed in 2012. The overhaul was carried out based on the design of Italian circuit designer Jarno Zaffelli, transforming it into an international-standard facility. Its layout features a varied mix of medium-speed and fast corners with several overtaking opportunities, which contributed to well-received racing on its return to the MotoGP calendar.

On 6 February 2021, a fire destroyed the circuit's pit buildings. The disaster required a full reconstruction of the grandstand, media centre, and pit garages. Reconstruction works were completed before the 2022 Argentine Republic motorcycle Grand Prix, allowing the race to go ahead without delay.

Argentina hosted Grand Prix motorcycle racing ten times at the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Buenos Aires during the earlier decades of the world championship before the event disappeared from the calendar. The return in 2014 at Termas de Río Hondo marked the first time the country hosted MotoGP since the 1990s. The 2013 event had originally been planned for Termas de Río Hondo, but was postponed by one year. The postponement was triggered by concerns relating to the Argentine government's nationalisation of the local subsidiary of Repsol and the subsequent cancellation of fuel exports to Argentina, which raised safety concerns for the Repsol Honda MotoGP team given their sponsor's involvement in the dispute.

Once established, the Argentine Grand Prix ran annually from 2014 through 2019, consistently slotted as one of the early rounds of the season. The race did not take place during 2020 (COVID-19 pandemic) and returned in 2022. The 2024 edition was cancelled, with organisers citing "current circumstances" in the country as the reason — a reference to Argentina's severe economic instability under austerity measures introduced by the new government. The 2025 race went ahead, sponsored by YPF Energía de Argentina.

Looking further ahead, it was confirmed that the Argentine Grand Prix would return to the Autódromo Oscar Alfredo Gálvez in Buenos Aires from 2027, with no race in 2026 as that circuit undergoes renovation works.

The circuit has served as a venue for several international series beyond MotoGP. The World Touring Car Championship held its FIA WTCC Race of Argentina at Termas from 2013 to 2017. In 2013 the circuit also hosted the first official MotoGP and Moto2 pre-season test sessions. Penske Entertainment CEO Mark Miles visited the circuit in March 2023 to evaluate the possibility of hosting a future IndyCar race at the facility.

Domestically, the circuit hosts events in the TC2000 Championship, Top Race V6, Turismo Nacional, Turismo Carretera, and Formula Renault Argentina series, making it one of the most active circuits in South America.

The race has operated under several official sponsor titles:

2014–2015: Gran Premio Red Bull de la República Argentina

2016–2019: Gran Premio Motul de la República Argentina

2022–2023: Gran Premio Michelin de la República Argentina

2025: Gran Premio YPF Energía de Argentina
