Sutton began karting in 2000 and raced at that level until 2009, when he switched to the 750 Motor Club Formula Vee Championship. Driving a Storm, he won the Rookie of the Year award and finished fourth overall in the championship, taking three victories at Castle Combe, Brands Hatch, and Pembrey, with five further podiums.
A road car accident forced Sutton out of racing for two and a half years. He returned in the 2014 British Formula Ford Championship, finishing third in the standings with five wins, sixteen podiums, four pole positions, and ten fastest laps. For 2015 he moved to the Renault Clio Cup United Kingdom with backing from the BTCC team Team BMR, winning that championship with six wins, fourteen podiums, four pole positions, and four fastest laps.
In March 2016 Sutton was announced as a BTCC entrant with MG Racing RCIB Insurance, driving a MG6 GT. He finished fourth in the opening race of the season and claimed his first win in a wet race three at Croft Circuit. He also won the Jack Sears Trophy, awarded to the top-performing rookie in the championship.
For 2017 Sutton returned to Team BMR. He failed to score a point at the opening round at Brands Hatch but recovered to win at Oulton Park, Croft, Snetterton, Knockhill, and Rockingham. He headed into the season finale holding a ten-point championship lead. In the final race of the year, rival Colin Turkington was hit on lap 2, ending his title challenge and confirming Sutton as champion. At 23 years old, he became the youngest BTCC champion since John Fitzpatrick in 1966.
Sutton defended his title in 2018, winning six races โ the most of any driver that season โ but finished fourth overall in the standings.
Sutton moved to Laser Tools Racing for the 2020 season and won the championship, then retained it in 2021 to secure back-to-back titles, his second and third overall championships with the team.
Sutton joined NAPA Racing UK for the 2022 season. In 2023 he took the BTCC title for a fourth time, scoring twelve wins during the season. That tally equalled the single-season wins record set by Alain Menu in 1997. Sutton also became the first driver since Menu in 2000 to win the BTCC title in a Ford-powered car.
Outside the BTCC, Sutton competed in the inaugural season of the TCR UK series with Verizon Connect Racing, winning two races of what became a shortened campaign.
Sutton was educated at Birchwood High School, where he studied auto mechanics and engineering, giving him a technical grounding that has informed his approach to car setup throughout his career.
