On 30 November 2020, Audi announced their intention to compete in the Dakar Rally, with Q Motorsport confirmed as the factory team on 11 December 2020. The RS Q e-tron was unveiled on 23 July 2021 ahead of its competitive debut at the 2022 Dakar Rally. An upgraded model designated the RS Q e-tron E2 debuted in 2022, and a further updated version of the vehicle went on to win the 2024 Dakar Rally.
The Audi RS Q e-tron is a purpose-built off-road competition car developed under Audi's e-tron battery electric sub-brand. It uses a hybrid powertrain combining two electric motors sourced from Audi's Formula E programme — one on each axle — for a combined output of under 288 kilowatts (386 hp), alongside a TFSI combustion engine rated at approximately 200 kilowatts (270 hp) that acts as an energy converter with a maximum charging power of 220 kilowatts (300 hp).
The car earned a reputation for demanding driving characteristics. Stéphane Peterhansel described driving the RS Q e-tron during the 2023 Dakar as "a boxing match from start to finish," with the sharp acceleration of the electric motors and the rigidity of the competition seating raising concerns about concussion risk for crews over long desert stages.
At the 2022 Dakar Rally, Audi fielded three crews: Carlos Sainz and Lucas Cruz; Stéphane Peterhansel and Edouard Boulanger; and Mattias Ekstrom and Emil Bergkvist. All three drivers won a stage on debut, with Sainz claiming an additional victory on stage 11 for a total of four stage wins. Navigation errors from all three crews on the opening day, combined with mechanical issues, prevented a challenge for the overall classification.
The RS Q e-tron achieved its first competitive win at the 2022 Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, when Peterhansel and Boulanger won the event — a historic result as the first victory for an electric vehicle in a rally raid.
At the 2024 Dakar Rally, Carlos Sainz drove the RS Q e-tron to its first overall Dakar victory. Technical director Dr. Pascali Leonardo, who oversaw the programme's technical development for the 2024 event, described the win as "the best professional experience of my life."
Audi's entry into the Dakar Rally coincided with the event's evolution toward alternative powertrains. The ASO introduced a Mission 1000 category in 2024 for electric, hydrogen, and hybrid vehicles as part of its Dakar Future programme. Audi's RS Q e-tron predated this category, competing in the main car class, but its technical philosophy aligned with the rally's stated direction toward sustainable competition technology.
Audi Sport's Dakar programme demonstrated that an electric-forward hybrid powertrain could win outright at the world's most demanding rally raid. The 2024 Dakar victory for Sainz validated years of engineering development and gave the RS Q e-tron a place in motorsport history as the first hybrid electric vehicle to win the Dakar Rally's car category overall. The programme also deepened Stéphane Peterhansel's connection to the event — the Frenchman, who holds the record for most overall Dakar victories, served as a key development driver for the project throughout its competitive life.
