Fernández made his Grand Prix debut at the 2017 Italian Grand Prix, substituting for Axel Bassani in the Speed Up team. He remained with Speed Up for the remainder of 2017, accumulating six points.
In 2018 he moved to Pons Racing after Héctor Barberá was dismissed from the team. Fernández proved an able replacement, scoring points in his first four races and closing the season with a 4th place in Australia and an 8th in Valencia, finishing 18th in the standings with 45 points.
The 2019 season established Fernández as a genuine title contender. After opening the year with a 5th place in Qatar, a double wrist fracture suffered in a crash during Argentina practice forced him to miss two rounds. On his return he claimed his maiden Moto2 podium at Jerez and backed it up with another third place the following weekend at Le Mans.
He took his first pole position at Barcelona, and at Assen he converted it into his first race victory after Álex Márquez and Lorenzo Baldassarri crashed out of the lead together. Two more wins followed at Britain and Misano. He ended the season fifth in the championship with 207 points.
For 2020 Fernández stepped into the seat vacated by the departing Álex Márquez at Marc VDS Racing, partnering Sam Lowes. The season was difficult — he failed to reach the podium all year, his best finish being a 4th in France — and he placed 13th in the standings with 71 points.
The 2021 season began poorly with four retirements in the first eight races, but Fernández recovered strongly in the second half of the year. He collected six podiums in the final ten rounds, including a 2nd at Rimini, finishing 5th in the championship with 174 points.
Fernández joined Red Bull KTM Ajo for the 2022 season. He won four races across the campaign and clinched the Moto2 Riders' World Championship, defeating Ai Ogura to the title. It was the culmination of a consistent rise through the intermediate class spanning six seasons.
Fernández graduated to the premier MotoGP class in 2023 with GasGas Factory Racing Tech3, alongside Pol Espargaró. His season highlight came at the French Grand Prix, where he qualified 12th and finished 4th — his best result in the class that year.
For 2024, with the team renamed Red Bull GasGas Tech3, Fernández was partnered with Pedro Acosta. He scored 27 points and finished 20th in the championship. At the end of the season KTM did not retain him for 2025.
Following his departure from the KTM stable, Fernández announced he would join Yamaha as an official MotoGP test rider before Yamaha's formal announcement. On 17 December 2024, Yamaha Racing confirmed him in the role, with provision for up to six wild-card races.
In 2025 he stepped in as a replacement for the injured Miguel Oliveira at Pramac Racing at the Americas, Qatar, and Spanish Grands Prix, scoring a 13th place in the United States. In September 2025 he signed an extension to remain Yamaha's test rider through the 2026 and 2027 seasons.
Fernández is not related to fellow MotoGP rider Raúl Fernández or Raúl's younger brother Adrián Fernández. His 2022 Moto2 title stands as the high point of his competitive career, marking him as one of the strongest performers in the intermediate class during that era before transitioning to a technical development role at Yamaha.
