Ray was born in Ashford, Kent, England. His early competitive career was spent in junior categories, beginning with a sixth-place finish in the 2011 British 125cc Championship riding a Honda RS125R. In 2012, he competed in both the British MotoStar Championship, where he finished as runner-up, and the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. He remained in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup for three seasons, improving from seventh in 2012 to fourth overall in 2014. During this period, he also contested the CEV Moto3 Championship, achieving a best seasonal result of 11th in 2014 using FTR/KTM machinery.
Ray transitioned toward heavier machinery in 2015, competing in the National Superstock 600 Championship and the FIM CEV Moto2 European Championship. He made a single Grand Prix appearance in 2015 as a wildcard entry in the Moto2 class at the British Grand Prix. In 2016, he moved to the British Supersport Championship, finishing third in the standings on a Yamaha YZF-R6.
His entry into the premier domestic class occurred in 2017 when he joined Hawk Racing to ride a Suzuki GSX-R1000 under the Buildbase sponsorship banner. He finished his debut British Superbike (BSB) season 11th in the standings.
The 2018 season served as Ray's competitive arrival at the front of the BSB field. On 1 April 2018, he took his first Superbike-level race victory at Donington Park. He concluded the year sixth in the championship. During the same year, he made his debut in the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) as a wildcard at the UK round at Donington Park, scoring points in both races with 14th and 15th-place finishes.
Following a final year with the Suzuki-equipped Hawk Racing team in 2019, Ray moved to TAS BMW for the 2020 season, partnering with Taylor Mackenzie. In November 2020, he signed with OMG Racing for the 2021 campaign. For the 2022 season, Ray remained with OMG Racing but transitioned from BMW to Yamaha machinery, utilizing the technical package previously used by the McAMS team. This equipment change preceded his most successful domestic campaign, as he secured the 2022 British Superbike Championship title.
Following his domestic title, Ray moved to the international stage full-time. He was contracted by the Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team to compete in the European rounds of the World Superbike Championship for the 2023 season. He continued with the same team for the 2024 WorldSBK season before electing to return to British competition.
Ray returned to the British Superbike Championship for the 2025 season, joining Raceways Yamaha. His return was marked by immediate success, winning five of the first six races of the season to take an early lead in the championship standings.
Across his career in the British Superbike Championship, Ray has campaigned for Suzuki, BMW, and Yamaha. His international record includes points-scoring finishes in WorldSBK and experience across Moto3, Moto2, and Supersport specifications.
