The series was established as part of the global FIA Formula 4 initiative, which Gerhard Berger and the FIA Single Seater Commission introduced in 2013 with the explicit goal of making the ladder to Formula One more transparent and affordable. Under FIA regulations a car could not exceed a purchase price of €30,000 and a full season's costs were capped at €100,000, making the category substantially cheaper than the Formula Three programmes it was designed to feed. The British championship was one of several national F4 series launched in this framework, joining the Italian F4 Championship and Formula 4 Sudamericana among the early adopters.
Motorsport UK adopted the series as the successor to British Formula Ford, a championship that had formed the backbone of British single-seater development since the 1960s. Running as a TOCA support series placed the championship on the same bills as BTCC rounds, providing young drivers with exposure to large spectator crowds and national television coverage from their first season in cars.
From 2015 to 2021, all competitors used the Mygale M14-F4 chassis, a carbon-fibre monocoque designed specifically for the FIA F4 category. The engine was a Ford 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit tuned to a maximum of 160 PS, prepared by Neil Brown Engineering under a sealed and equalised specification to prevent performance differentiation between teams. The championship used Hankook tyres on the same compound and construction as Formula Three, giving drivers exposure to professional-grade rubber. Sadev supplied the sequential paddle-shift transmission and Life Racing provided the engine control unit, which doubled as a complete data acquisition system with integrated GPS track mapping.
From 2022, following Ford's withdrawal from involvement and Motorsport UK taking over the championship organisation, the series transitioned to the Tatuus F4-T421 chassis with Abarth engines, aligning British F4 with the technical specification used by several other European national championships.
Each championship event comprises three races. Fifteen-year-olds are eligible to compete following Motorsport UK's decision to lower the minimum age limit for single-seater championships. The series champion earns the title of FIA Formula 4 champion and receives a test with a top-level regional Formula Three team as a prize, creating a direct structural link between British F4 and the next step on the professional ladder.
The series launched in 2015 under the MSA Formula name, branding that reflected the role of the Motor Sports Association (now Motorsport UK) in administering the championship. The Dunlop tyre brand provided title sponsorship in its early seasons, giving the series the longer official name Dunlop MSA Formula Ford in some periods, though the car and regulations were Formula 4 rather than traditional Formula Ford. The championship built a reputation for producing graduates who moved successfully into Formula Three, Formula Regional, and eventually Formula One feeder categories.
After seven seasons with the Mygale-Ford combination, the switch to Tatuus-Abarth hardware for 2022 modernised the package while maintaining the fundamental low-cost, controlled-specification philosophy. The series continued as part of the TOCA support package, maintaining its position as the most prominently televised junior single-seater championship in the United Kingdom.
