The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series was founded in 1995, with Sears, Roebuck and Co. holding naming rights through the Craftsman tool brand from the outset. When Craftsman's sponsorship concluded at the end of the 2008 season, the series required a new title sponsor. Camping World, an outdoor recreation and RV equipment retail chain, signed a seven-year contract with NASCAR and assumed title sponsorship beginning in 2009. The series was renamed the Camping World Truck Series.
Under the Camping World name, the series retained its identity as NASCAR's truck-focused third national division while navigating a period of financial pressure. As the 2010s progressed, the series faced declining sponsorship revenue and rising costs that forced some prominent teams to exit. Richard Childress Racing shut down its truck operations after the 2013 season. Brad Keselowski publicly acknowledged in 2014 that his Brad Keselowski Racing team had lost one million dollars despite recording a race win that year, describing the economic reality bluntly: "The truck series, you have to be able to lose money on a constant basis." BKR ultimately ceased operations after the 2017 season.
Camping World signed a seven-year extension in 2014, extending its commitment to the series through at least 2022.
On May 8, 2018, NASCAR and Camping World announced that the truck series's title sponsorship would transition to Gander Outdoors, a Camping World subsidiary focused on outdoor gear, beginning with the 2019 season. The series was renamed the Gander Outdoors Truck Series. In 2020, a slight rebranding updated the name to the Gander RV and Outdoors Truck Series to reflect the subsidiary's expanded focus on recreational vehicle products.
For the 2021 season, the series reverted to the Camping World Truck Series name, completing a full circle within the same corporate family. The arrangement continued through 2022.
The Camping World family's involvement with the series concluded after 2022. Stanley Black and Decker, which had acquired the Craftsman brand from Sears in 2017, announced a multi-year sponsorship deal with NASCAR in August 2022. Beginning with the 2023 season, the series returned to its original Craftsman identity, now under Stanley Black and Decker stewardship rather than Sears. As part of the new arrangement, Stanley Black and Decker also became the official tool brand of NASCAR.
Camping World's tenure as the primary naming rights partner of NASCAR's truck series โ running from 2009 through 2022 in various brand configurations โ covered one of the most economically challenging periods in the division's history. Despite the financial pressures affecting team viability, the series continued to serve as a proving ground for developing drivers throughout this era, with graduates who would go on to compete in the Cup and Xfinity series. The return of the Craftsman name in 2023 was widely seen as a restoration of the series's original commercial identity, albeit under new corporate ownership.
