Leclerc arrived at Formula 2 having won the 2016 GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix, itself a dominant title campaign. A member of the Ferrari Driver Academy, he was paired with fellow academy driver Antonio Fuoco at Prema for 2017. The season was shadowed by the illness and subsequent death of his father Hervé, who passed away four days before Leclerc won the feature race at the Baku round.
Leclerc opened his Formula 2 campaign at the Bahrain circuit, taking pole for the feature race and finishing third. In the reverse-grid sprint, he built a nine-second lead from an early stage, then made an uncommon mid-race pit stop before overtaking 13 drivers in nine laps to claim his maiden victory. The aggressive and creative driving this manoeuvre demonstrated set the tone for the season.
At Barcelona, he won the feature race from pole despite a radio failure throughout the race, holding off Luca Ghiotto. He then retired from both races in Monaco after qualifying on pole twice, suffering suspension failure in the feature and collision damage in the sprint — a weekend he described as "hugely disappointing." Baku followed: Leclerc dedicated his pole position to his recently deceased father, converted it to victory in the feature race, and finished second in the sprint after a time penalty. He won the Spielberg feature from pole, then picked up further victories at Silverstone and other rounds across the season.
By Jerez, with a 59-point championship lead over Oliver Rowland heading into the penultimate round, Leclerc needed pole and victory in the feature race to clinch the title. He achieved both, becoming, at 19 years and 356 days old, the then-youngest GP2 or Formula 2 champion — the record was subsequently broken. He was also only the third rookie champion after Lewis Hamilton, Nico Rosberg, and Nico Hulkenberg. At the season-ending Yas Island round, he added a seventh victory to his tally after starting seventh in the sprint and overtaking Alexander Albon on the final lap.
Leclerc's 2017 season in Formula 2 produced records that stood for several years. He claimed eight pole positions in a single season, equalling a GP2/F2 record. His seven victories in the season equalled another record. He finished the championship 72 points clear of runner-up Artem Markelov and was named FIA Rookie of the Year for 2017. The campaign also featured a disqualification at Spa-Francorchamps for excessive skid block wear, and one at Budapest for a technical infringement in qualifying — incidents that added drama to a title race that was ultimately never in serious doubt.
Despite his dominance, the season included multiple setbacks. At Monza, while battling for the lead on the final lap with Nyck de Vries following a late safety car, the pair collided, leaving both outside the points. The Baku sprint win was overturned by a 10-second penalty for ignoring yellow flags. At Spa, a 25-second winning margin in the feature was erased by disqualification for skid block wear. That Leclerc still clinched the title with a race to spare despite these reversals underlined his points-building consistency.
Leclerc's 2017 Formula 2 title remains one of the most statistically dominant campaigns in the category's history. It fulfilled Ferrari's expectations for their junior driver and earned him a Formula One seat with Sauber for 2018. His father Hervé, who had learned that Leclerc was close to signing an F1 contract but died before the deal was announced, had been told by Charles — in a compassionate lie — that the contract was already signed. The season is therefore remembered not only as a sporting landmark but as an intensely personal one for Leclerc and the people closest to him.
