Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix

The Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix is a round of the FIM Grand Prix motorcycle racing season held at the Brno Circuit in the Czech Republic. One of the most storied events in the world motorcycle championship, the Brno round has a history stretching back to the 1960s under the Czechoslovak flag and holds the distinction of having hosted more motorcycle championship rounds than any circuit in history except the TT Circuit Assen.

The event's origins lie in the Czechoslovak motorcycle Grand Prix, which first appeared in the world championship in 1965. The original Brno circuit was a demanding road course that wound through the streets and suburban roads of the western parts of Brno and neighbouring villages including Bosonohy and Zebetín. This street-based layout gave the event a character distinct from purpose-built circuits, with the race considered the most prestigious motor racing event in the country.

Between 1983 and 1986, the race was held exclusively as part of the European Grand Prix series rather than the full world championship. The event returned to the world series from 1987 onwards.

In 1987 a purpose-built replacement circuit was constructed near the city of Brno, and all subsequent championship rounds have been held on this modern facility. The new Brno Circuit retains the traditional location but provides proper pit facilities, run-off areas, and a layout designed to produce competitive motorcycle racing. The circuit is characterised by elevation changes and a mix of medium and fast corners that place a premium on outright engine performance and chassis stability under braking.

The event reflected the political changes in central Europe across its decades on the calendar. Early editions were known as the Velka Cena CSSR (1965–1966, 1970–1971) and Grand Prix CSSR (1972–1982), referring to the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic. Following the Velvet Revolution, the event was renamed Grand Prix CSFR-Brno (1990–1991) to reflect the transitional Czechoslovak Federal Republic, before becoming the Grand Prix Ceske republiky from 1993 as the Czech Republic emerged as an independent nation. From 2000 to 2019 the event carried title sponsor names including Gauloises (2000–2006), Cardion AB (2007–2011), bwin (2012–2015), and HJC Helmets (2016) and Monster Energy (2017–2020).

The Czech Republic Grand Prix was absent from the MotoGP calendar from 2021 to 2024, a gap attributed to organisational and financial challenges at the circuit. The race returned for the 2025 MotoGP World Championship season, continuing its long association with the championship. The 2025 event was titled the Tissot Grand Prix of Czechia, with Monster Energy returning as title sponsor for 2026.

The Czech Republic motorcycle Grand Prix is one of the most historically deep events in the world motorcycle championship, carrying the weight of Czechoslovak and Czech motorsport heritage since 1965. The Brno Circuit's record as the second most frequent host of championship rounds in history, behind only Assen, underscores the event's enduring importance to the sport. Its combination of historical depth and demanding circuit character has made it a favourite among riders and spectators alike.
