The idea for Darlington Raceway originated with local resident Harold Brasington, who attended the 1933 Indianapolis 500 and envisioned replicating that event's prestige in the American Southeast using stock car racing. After years of ownership in a trucking business, Brasington acquired a 105-acre plot of land from a personal friend, J.S. Ramsey, and began construction. Accounts vary on whether groundbreaking occurred in late 1949 or early 1950, but the track was completed in time for an opening race that summer. The facility reportedly earned the derogatory local nickname "Harold's Folly" during its construction period.
A critical design compromise shaped the track permanently: when Ramsey grew concerned that the grading for turns three and four might destroy a fishing pond he valued, Brasington tightened the radius of turns one and two to avoid the pond. This decision created the asymmetrical layout that defines Darlington to this day โ the first two turns have a tighter radius than the last two, meaning drivers must use a different approach and line in each pair of corners.
Darlington measures 1.366 miles with 25 degrees of banking in turns one and two and 23 degrees in turns three and four, with 6 degrees on the straights. Its surface has long been regarded as unusually abrasive, eating through tires more aggressively than most NASCAR venues. The combination of abrasive pavement, asymmetrical corners, and a preferred racing line that runs close to the outer wall creates a unique challenge: teams frequently sacrifice performance in one set of turns to gain an advantage in the other.
The track's difficulty gave rise to the concept of the "Darlington Stripe" โ a scrape of paint or bodywork damage along the right side of a car caused by making contact with the outside retaining wall. Because the fastest line through Darlington's corners runs close to the wall, nearly every car that completes a race at Darlington carries some form of contact mark. The stripe became a badge of honor among drivers and fans, symbolizing that a car had been pushed to its limits.
Darlington Raceway officially opened on August 19, 1950 for qualifying races, with the inaugural Southern 500 following on September 4, won by Johnny Mantz. The Southern 500 quickly grew into one of NASCAR's most prestigious events, eventually becoming one of the sport's designated "Crown Jewel" races. For decades it was held annually on Labor Day weekend, anchoring the end of the season as a grueling test of endurance.
Colvin's tenure as track president, which followed Brasington's early departure, saw extensive development of the facility including grandstand expansions and track upgrades. It also included racially segregationist policies: grandstand seating was maintained as all-white, and early Black NASCAR driver Wendell Scott was barred from competing at the circuit for most of Colvin's tenure. After Colvin died in 1967, the facility changed hands several times before being acquired by the France family's International Speedway Corporation in 1982.
ISC oversaw major renovations through the 1980s and 1990s, including a complete repave in 1995 and the reconfiguration of the start-finish line from the frontstretch to the backstretch in 1997. Permanent lighting was added in 2004.
The Southern 500 was lost from its traditional Labor Day slot in 2004 when NASCAR's national expansion strategy and the aftermath of the Ferko lawsuit led to Darlington losing a fall race date to California Speedway. The spring race was converted to a 500-mile event as a partial replacement. After years of sustained fan protest, the Southern 500 returned to its Labor Day weekend position in 2015. NASCAR took ownership of the track in 2019 after buying out ISC.
Darlington's nicknames โ "The Lady in Black" and "Too Tough to Tame" โ reflect a track culture built around difficulty, tradition, and respect for raw circuit challenge. In an era when many NASCAR venues have become more standardized, Darlington's asymmetrical layout, abrasive surface, and wall-grazing racing lines keep it distinct. The annual throwback weekend, introduced in 2015, in which teams run retro liveries and paint schemes from NASCAR's past, has reinforced Darlington's role as the sport's primary site of historical commemoration.
