The team was established in 2018 when driver and entrepreneur David Gilliland partnered with Bo LeMastus to acquire the assets of Red Horse Racing. The newly formed entity launched under the name DGR-Crosley, reflecting a partnership with Crosley Sports Group. In 2021, co-ownership shifted when Johnny Gray took over as co-owner, and the team was rebranded as David Gilliland Racing. The team subsequently adopted the additional identity Tricon Garage, a brand used to reflect its multi-truck, multi-series scope.
David Leonard Gilliland (born April 1, 1976, Riverside, California) comes from a motorsport family: his father Butch Gilliland raced in the NASCAR Winston West Series, and David served as crew chief for Butch's 1997 championship season. David built his own national reputation before transitioning to team ownership.
His most celebrated driver moment came in 2006 when he scored an unexpected win in the NASCAR Busch Series at Kentucky Speedway in the No. 84 Chevrolet for Clay Andrews Racing. He was not competing in a full-time Nextel Cup schedule at the time, making him the first such driver in 2006 to win a Busch race. He went on to earn the pole for the 2007 Daytona 500 in his first full Cup season, driving the No. 38 Ford for Yates Racing, and he finished the race in eighth. His career-best Cup result was a second-place finish at Sonoma Raceway in 2008.
From 2010 through 2015, Gilliland drove for Front Row Motorsports in the No. 34 and No. 38 Fords. He scored a third at the 2011 Daytona 500 and, at the 2013 spring Talladega race, pushed teammate David Ragan to victory while finishing second himself — giving FRM its first one-two finish in team history. He also won the pole for the 2014 Coke Zero 400, the first pole in Front Row Motorsports history. After 2015 Gilliland wound down his Cup appearances and did not race at all in 2017, turning his focus to building the ownership side of the business.
Since 2018, David Gilliland Racing has run multiple Truck Series entries alongside campaigns in the ARCA Menards Series East, West, and the CARS Tour. David has continued to make selected appearances behind the wheel of his own team's trucks and ARCA cars, including a win in the 2020 ARCA Menards Series West finale at Phoenix.
David's son Todd Gilliland — a two-time champion in what is now the ARCA Menards Series West — competes full-time in the Cup Series in the No. 34 Ford Mustang for Front Row Motorsports, which maintains an alliance with Tricon Garage. The Gilliland family became the first in NASCAR history to produce three generations of race winners when Todd won at Toledo Speedway in 2015 at age 15 years and two days.
