Sandström began racing karts in the early 1990s before transitioning to circuit competition. In 1999 and 2000 he contested the Volvo S40 Junior Touring Car Cup, winning the championship title in his second season. He moved into single-seater racing between 2001 and 2004: in 2001 he finished as runner-up in the Zetec class of Swedish Formula Ford, and in 2003 and 2004 he competed in the Formula Renault V6 Eurocup, recording a best overall placement of 17th in 2003. Alongside his formula career, Sandström drove in the Swedish Touring Car Championship in 2002, 2005, and 2006, finishing fourth overall in both 2002 and 2005.
From 2006 to 2010, Sandström competed in the Porsche Carrera Cup Scandinavia, winning the championship title in 2007 — his first major GT honour. He subsequently moved to GT3 machinery, joining Schubert Motorsport to drive a BMW Z4 GT3 in the FIA GT3 European Championship during 2010 and 2011 and finishing sixth overall in 2010 alongside Patrick Söderlund.
Sandström made four separate campaigns in the ADAC GT Masters — in 2010, 2012, 2015, and 2016 — achieving his best result of eighth overall in 2015 with the kfzteile24 MS Racing team in an Audi R8 LMS ultra. In the 2016 season he drove an Audi R8 LMS GT3 for kfzteile24 APR Motorsport.
Between 2011 and 2015 he competed in the GT3 Pro Cup of the Blancpain Endurance Series with various teams, earning his best overall result of third in 2014 with the French outfit Saintéloc Racing in an Audi R8 LMS ultra. He also contested the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup in 2016 and the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup in 2017.
In 2013 Sandström drove for the Belgian Audi Club Team WRT alongside Frank Stippler in the FIA GT Series Pro classification and secured the runner-up title for the season. Parallel appearances during this era included the American Le Mans Series in 2011, the Swedish GT Series in 2012 and 2015, the French GT Championship in 2014 and 2015, and the Intercontinental GT Challenge in 2017.
Sandström built a notable record in 24-hour endurance racing. He competed at the Nürburgring 24 Hours from 2010 to 2018, taking second place in the SP9 GT3 classification in 2010 for Schubert Motorsport in a BMW Z4 GT3, and winning the SP9 class outright in 2015 for Audi Sport Team WRT in an Audi R8 LMS.
In the 24H Series he won the Dubai 24 Hours in 2011, co-driving a BMW Z4 GT3 with Augusto Farfus, Claudia Hürtgen, and Tommy Milner for Schubert Motorsport. That same year he recorded another victory for Schubert Motorsport alongside Michael Outzen, Lars Stugemo, and Peter Posavac. At the 24 Hours of Zolder in 2012 he drove for the W Racing Team in an Audi R8 LMS to take the overall win.
In 2015 Sandström made a single-race excursion into the FIA World Rallycross Championship, entering for the EKS RX team and placing 28th in the season's overall standings — a brief departure from his established base in GT and endurance competition.
