The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was established in 2020 following disruptions to the original race calendar caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Intended as a "one-off" event to replace cancelled races, the inaugural Grand Prix featured a unique two-day weekend format. This experimental structure utilized only a single practice session on Saturday rather than the usual three. Mercedes's Valtteri Bottas took pole position, while his teammate Lewis Hamilton won the race.
Despite the initial one-off intent, the ongoing pandemic led to the event's return on April 18, 2021. It served as the second round of the 2021 season, replacing the postponed Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton secured pole position, but Max Verstappen won the race, which was characterized by dramatic, rain-affected conditions.
The event returned for a third time in 2022, hosting one of the season's three sprint formats. During this event, Max Verstappen won for the second consecutive year and achieved his second career grand slam. Early in 2022, organizers signed a contract to continue the Grand Prix through 2025.
The 2023 edition was cancelled due to heavy rainfall and flooding caused by Storm Minerva, which affected the Emilia-Romagna region. The race returned in 2024, where Max Verstappen took the victory ahead of McLaren's Lando Norris and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc.
The 2025 edition marked the final running of the event under its existing contract. Max Verstappen won the race, followed by McLaren teammates Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in second and third place.
In June 2025, it was announced that Formula One would not return to Imola for the 2026 season and beyond. The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was discontinued and replaced on the 2026 calendar by the Madring, a street) circuit located in Madrid.
All editions of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix were held at the Autodromo Internazionale Enzo e Dino Ferrari.
