Epsilon Euskadi ee1

section:concept
The Epsilon Euskadi ee1 is a racing prototype built by Spanish constructor Epsilon Euskadi for competition in the Le Mans Prototype LMP1 class of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and similar endurance events. The car debuted in 2008, representing a significant in-house engineering effort from the Vitoria-based Basque Country team.

The ee1 was designed and constructed by Epsilon Euskadi specifically for top-tier endurance prototype racing. Competing in the LMP1 category placed the car alongside machinery from well-resourced factory-backed programmes, making the effort from a relatively small independent Spanish team a notable undertaking. The car was finished in an all-black livery that drew attention during its Le Mans appearances.

The ee1 made its competitive debut at the 2008 1000km of Catalunya, part of the Le Mans Series. Epsilon Euskadi entered a single car, the number 20, driven by Angel Burgueno and Miguel Angel de Castro. The car finished 32nd overall โ€” third from last among classified finishers โ€” completing 167 laps. The Catalunya round was effectively a home event for the Basque constructor, adding significance to the appearance despite the modest result.

The team's only points-scoring finish of the 2008 Le Mans Series season came at the 1000km of Spa. The number 20 car crossed the line eleventh overall and seventh in class after completing 133 laps, earning Epsilon Euskadi two championship points across the five-round season.

The most high-profile appearance of the ee1 came at the 2008 24 Hours of Le Mans, where Epsilon Euskadi entered two cars. The number 20 was crewed by Angel Burgueno, Miguel Angel de Castro, and Adrian Valles. The number 21 was driven by Shinji Nakano, Stefan Johansson, and Jean-Marc Gounon โ€” a more experienced international line-up reflecting the event's prestige.

Qualifying produced encouraging results for the independent constructor. The number 21 car qualified 15th overall with a best time of 3 minutes 32.939 seconds, while the number 20 car qualified 17th with a best time of 3 minutes 34.281 seconds. These positions represented competitive showings for an independent team in the LMP1 class.

The race itself, however, ended in double retirement for the team. Mechanical problems eliminated both cars before the finish. The number 21 car was first to stop, having completed 158 laps. The number 20 car lasted slightly longer before also retiring after 189 laps. Neither car was classified as a finisher.

The Epsilon Euskadi ee1 stands as evidence of an independent Spanish constructor's determination to compete at endurance racing's highest level during the mid-to-late 2000s. While the 2008 campaign produced limited results โ€” two championship points from the full Le Mans Series season and no classified finish at Le Mans itself โ€” the team demonstrated genuine technical competence by building a prototype that qualified respectably at the world's most demanding endurance race. The car also formed part of the broader Epsilon Euskadi project, which simultaneously pursued Formula One entry and operated a World Series by Renault programme before transitioning to EPIC Racing in 2011.
