Cais was born and raised in Zlín, a city in the Moravian region of the Czech Republic long associated with motorsport through its famous home rally event. His father is the former professional cyclist Miroslav Cais. Before entering motorsport, Erik competed as a downhill mountain bike racer alongside French rally driver Nicolas Vouilloz. His co-driver is Jindriška Žáková, who previously navigated Martin Vlcek.
Cais made his rally debut in 2018 in an Opel Adam Cup. He quickly graduated to a Peugeot 208 R2 to compete in the Czech national rally championship. In 2019 he stepped up to the FIA European Rally Championship driving a Ford Fiesta R2T19. From the 2019 Rallye du Var onward his primary competition car became the Ford Fiesta Rally2.
In 2019, Cais received the inaugural Talent of the Year FIA CEZ award, presented by FIA President Jean Todt, in recognition of his rapid development. He also finished as runner-up in the ERC3 junior class that year.
In 2020 the British weekly Motorsport News listed Cais among the world's top ten rally talents not yet competing in the WRC premier class. He contested the ERC main class that season, finishing eleventh in the championship and fifth in the junior category — a strong result for a driver still accumulating top-level experience.
In 2021 Cais made his most significant impression in the ERC, improving to sixth in the overall championship. His most dramatic performance came at his home event, the Barum Czech Rally Zlín. He dominated the final day's stages and appeared set for his first ERC victory before crashing on the penultimate stage, which forced his retirement. Additional highlights that year included victory at the Auto UH Rallysprint Kopná, second place at the Austrian Rally Weiz, and an outright win at the Polish Rally Rajd Rzeszowski.
Cais made his World Rally Championship debut in 2021 at Rally Catalunya, where he finished third in the WRC2 class — a composed result on his first appearance at the sport's top level. In December 2021 he announced that he would contest the full WRC2 Championship in 2022, marking his transition from regional European rally competition to the worldwide stage.
Cais represents a generation of Central European rally drivers whose careers have been shaped by the strong infrastructure of national championships and FIA-affiliated junior programmes. His rapid ascent from Opel Adam Cup competitor in 2018 to WRC2 challenger in 2022 within four seasons illustrates both his talent and the effectiveness of the Yacco ACCR Team's development pathway. His near-win at Zlín in 2021 remains his most memorable performance and underlines the potential that Motorsport News and FIA observers identified in him from an early stage.
