Born on 17 September 1996 in Γvreux, Normandy, Ocon had already demonstrated championship pedigree in karting, winning the French KF3 title in 2010 and finishing runner-up in the WSK Euro Series in 2011 behind Max Verstappen. His single-seater trajectory was rapid: a debut season in Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 with Koiranen Motorsport in 2012 was followed by a stronger campaign in 2013, by which time Gravity Sports management and the Renault ecosystem were closely monitoring his development.
After winning two Formula Renault 2.0 races in the Eurocup during 2013 with the ART Junior Team β finishing third overall behind Pierre Gasly and Oliver Rowland β Ocon made a cameo at the 2013 Macau Grand Prix with Prema Powerteam. The appearance, though modest in result (he stalled at the start of the main race and recovered to finish tenth), forged the partnership that would define 2014.
Ocon joined Prema Powerteam for the 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship full-time. He led the standings from the opening round at Silverstone Circuit and was never displaced from the top of the championship for the remainder of the season.
The scale of the title run was exceptional. In thirty-three races across the season, Ocon stood on the podium twenty-one times and won nine of them. He recorded fifteen pole positions. The championship was clinched with three rounds remaining, a rare margin in a category where competition at the front is typically fierce. Blomqvist finished second in the championship, with Verstappen β who would go on to become a dominant Formula One world champion β third.
As part of his FIA Formula 3 European champion's prize, Ocon completed a test in the Ferrari F10 at Fiorano Circuit, and had already driven the Lotus E20 at Circuit Ricardo Tormo in October 2014. He also made a second appearance at the Macau Grand Prix that year, qualifying fourth for the main race before being eliminated by a first-lap multi-car collision.
The 2014 FIA Formula 3 European Championship title was the moment that transformed Ocon from a well-regarded junior talent into a confirmed Formula One prospect. The Mercedes Junior Team signed him in 2015, directly connected to the breadth of the title-winning performance. The same season, Force India used him in a post-race test at Barcelona after Pascal Wehrlein withdrew through illness, and by 2016 Ocon had a Reserve Driver role with Renault and was racing in DTM for Mercedes alongside it.
The championship also established defining characteristics that Ocon carried forward: a meticulous approach to tyre management, the ability to lead from the front across consecutive weekends, and a composure under pressure that showed in the fifteen pole positions he converted without squandering points through avoidable errors. The title field β Blomqvist, Verstappen, and a range of subsequent Formula One drivers β made it one of the more significant F3 vintages of the decade.
Ocon made his Formula One debut at the 2016 Belgian Grand Prix with Manor Racing after replacing Rio Haryanto. He moved to Force India for 2017, became a race winner at the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix with Alpine, and later joined Haas for 2025.
