Scherer began his car racing career in Formula 4 in 2016 and continued in Formula 4 through 2017. In 2018 he moved to the FIA Formula 3 European Championship with Motopark Academy. For 2019 he competed in the new FIA Formula 3 Championship with Charouz Racing System (entered as Sauber Junior Team).
For the 2020 season Scherer migrated to the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters, driving an Audi RS5 Turbo for Audi Sport Team WRT. The campaign was difficult — his only points scores came at the Zolder Circuit, where he finished fifth on two occasions. He ended the season 16th in the championship, last among the full-time competitors.
Scherer moved to prototype racing in 2021, joining United Autosports in the LMP2 class of the FIA World Endurance Championship alongside Filipe Albuquerque and Phil Hanson. He started the year with a class victory on his WEC debut at Spa-Francorchamps. He had to miss the following round due to COVID-19 but later in the season added a second LMP2 class win, at Monza. He finished fifth in the LMP2 championship standings for the year.
Scherer joined Inter Europol Competition for 2022. He made a one-off WEC appearance to replace a COVID-affected Alex Brundle before focusing on the European Le Mans Series, where he partnered Pietro Fittipaldi and David Heinemeier Hansson across the season.
Scherer remained at Inter Europol Competition for 2023, returning to the WEC as a full-season entry alongside Albert Costa and Jakub Śmiechowski. The trio scored points in all seven rounds of the championship and reached a podium at Spa.
The defining moment of Scherer's career came at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. During a pit stop, a Corvette ran over his foot, breaking it. He returned to the car regardless and drove a late stint, holding off Louis Delétraz to secure the LMP2 class victory. The win also contributed to the crew finishing second in the LMP2 class championship overall.
Scherer returned to the European Le Mans Series in 2024, partnering Paul di Resta and Bijoy Garg at United Autosports. He also made a Le Mans 24h start that year for Nielsen Racing, finishing 11th in the LMP2 class after an overnight collision.
Going into 2025, Scherer was announced as a GT3 junior driver for Ford and re-entered the DTM with the Haupt Racing Team (HRT) in a Ford Mustang GT3, finishing 23rd in the standings.
In parallel, Scherer raced in the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie with HRT. At NLS10 he set a qualifying record of 7:48.717, going on to finish fourth overall and first in class in the SP9 Pro-Am category alongside Jonas Assenheimer.
For 2026, Scherer continues with HRT Ford Racing in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup and the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie.
