The complex was established to honour Fernando Alonso, who was born in Oviedo, Asturias, and went on to become one of the most celebrated racing drivers in Formula One history, winning back-to-back World Drivers' Championships in 2005 and 2006. Sited in Llanera, the facility is close to Alonso's hometown and serves as both a tribute to his career and a hub for motorsport development in the Asturian region.
The centrepiece of the complex is the Fernando Alonso Collection, which chronicles his racing career from childhood. The collection includes most of the racing cars Alonso competed in from the age of three onward, as well as the racing suits and helmets he wore at different stages of his career and the trophies he accumulated. A notable additional element is Alonso's personal collection of helmets belonging to other professional drivers, displayed alongside his own career artefacts.
The museum houses all Formula One cars that Alonso raced before 2016. Particular prominence is given to the championship-winning Renault R25 and R26 — the cars that secured his two consecutive World Drivers' Championships in 2005 and 2006. A Renault RS25 engine from the 2005 Formula One season is separately displayed. Also on show is the 2018 McLaren MCL33 in the special Abu Dhabi livery used for Alonso's farewell Formula One appearance at the end of that season.
The 2017 McLaren-Honda-Andretti Dallara DW12 is exhibited as a record of Alonso's high-profile attempt at the Indianapolis 500 that year, one of the most discussed crossover appearances by a Formula One driver in the modern era.
The 2018 Toyota TS050 Hybrid is displayed as a commemoration of one of the most celebrated results in Alonso's career: his victory in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that season, sharing the car during Toyota's dominant WEC campaign. The Le Mans win, combined with his two Formula One titles and his Indianapolis programme, illustrated an ambition to complete motorsport's Triple Crown that made him one of the sport's most distinctive figures in the late stage of his career.
The karting circuit occupies 44,446.54 square metres and was purpose-designed with flexibility as a core objective. Its layout supports twenty-nine different track configurations, with lengths varying between 1,400 and 1,800 metres depending on the combination used. The main circuit can be divided into three separate secondary courses of 721, 637, and 372 metres, allowing multiple training groups or competition categories to operate simultaneously on separate sections of the track.
The circuit carries CIK-FIA homologation, qualifying it to host international karting competitions at the highest level under the sport's governing body. Fernando Alonso himself inaugurated the circuit on 18 March 2011, driving the first laps in front of a crowd of approximately 4,000 spectators. The opening ceremony underscored the complex's stated ambition to serve as a centre for nurturing motorsport talent from Asturias and beyond.
Alongside the museum and karting facilities, the complex includes a golf course, broadening its appeal beyond the motorsport community and establishing it as a multi-discipline sports destination for visitors to the Asturian region.
