Formula DRIFT was established in 2003 to own, operate, and launch the first official drifting series in North America. Its founders, Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage, built it as a sister entity to Slipstream Global Marketing. Tengku Djan became the first Formula DRIFT Asia Champion.
The series has used a wide range of venues. Current tracks include the Long Beach Street Circuit in California (2006–2019, 2021–present), Road Atlanta in Braselton, Georgia (2004–2019, 2021–present), Orlando Speed World in Orlando, Florida (2015–2019, 2021–present), Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington (2006–present), and Las Vegas Motor Speedway (2008–2012, 2026). Stafford Speedway in Connecticut and Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park are listed for 2026.
Former venues include Irwindale Speedway in California (2004–2024), Sonoma Raceway (2004–2013), Wall Speedway in New Jersey (2005–2007, 2009–2019), and Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth (2013–2020), among others.
From 2008 onwards Formula DRIFT expanded internationally. Formula DRIFT Asia was established in 2008 with the inaugural Formula DRIFT Singapore event at the Changi Air Show Grounds, which sold out before the gates opened. The Asia series grew to include rounds in Thailand and Malaysia in 2009 and 2010, and added Indonesia for 2011–12. Jim Liaw stated: "Taking the Formula DRIFT brand internationally is a huge milestone. Our priority is to continue to build the Series here while growing the sport of drifting as a whole." International affiliates evaluated by the organisation include Drift Australia, MSC, and Pro Drift. Exhibition events have been held at venues including Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi and the Autódromo Monterrey in Mexico.
Front-wheel drive cars are not permitted, though all-wheel drive cars may be converted to rear-wheel drive. Engine swaps are widely permitted, with engines from other manufacturers eligible for competition cars. Vehicles competing for the Manufacturers Championship must use an engine from the same manufacturer as the chassis. The open engine rulebook commonly results in power outputs in excess of 850 whp. Suspension modification is open to development provided stock pickup locations are used. Formula DRIFT assigns fixed car numbers not based on championship rankings. Maximum tyre size is capped based on vehicle weight.
Qualifying allows each driver two non-consecutive solo judged runs; the top 32 scores enter a competition bracket pairing highest against lowest (1st v. 32nd, 2nd v. 31st, etc.). Drivers begin each run with a perfect score of 100 points, losing between 0.25 and 1.75 points per mistake. Judging criteria include line, speed, angle, and overall impact.
In competition, tandem battles see the two drivers run together; the highest qualifying driver leads first, then the roles reverse. The lead driver attempts to pull a gap; the follow driver attempts to shadow as closely as possible. Mistakes such as two wheels off course, spinning out, or avoidable contact result in an automatic zero. Three judges determine one of three outcomes: Driver 1 advances, Driver 2 advances, or — if undecided — a "One More Time" is called and the pair runs again. A driver may invoke a one-time Competition Time Out to attempt repairs. Follow cars may overtake only at inside clips if the lead car is sufficiently off-line; a successful pass renders the lead car's run a zero.
Current judges are Robbie Nishida (2023–), Brian Eggert (2012–), and Chris Uhl (2020–). Kevin Wells serves as Competition Director.
Chris Forsberg was the first driver to win three championships (2009, 2014, and 2016). Fredric Aasbø later also won three (2015, 2021, and 2022). James Deane won five titles (2017, 2018, 2019, 2024, and 2025), becoming the first and only Formula DRIFT driver to win five championships and the first to win three consecutively.
The series presents a range of annual honours, including Rookie of the Year, Most Improved Driver, Driver of the Year, Hardest Charging Driver, Spirit of Drifting, Best Drifting Style, Best Personal Style, Crew Member of the Year, Team Manager of the Year, Comeback of the Year, and Fan Favorite. Stephan Papadakis has been named Team Manager of the Year in 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2023, and 2024. Chelsea DeNofa won the Hardest Charging Driver award in 2014, 2018, and 2020, and Best Drifting Style in 2019, 2021, and 2022.
The series aired on G4 in 2005 and 2006, hosted by Rossi Morreale (2005) and Brandon Johnson (2006), with Olivia Munn covering the pits and driver interviews. Jarod DeAnda served as public address announcer at each event. In 2007 the series moved to ESPN2, airing one-hour blocks beginning with the Long Beach round. SPEED Channel broadcast the 2008 season. For 2010, Formula DRIFT announced programming with Versus across fourteen Sundays.
