Hong Kong ePrix

The Hong Kong ePrix was an annual Formula E race held at the Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit, situated in the Central Harbourfront area of Hong Kong. First staged in the 2016โ€“17 Formula E season, it was the first major international motorsport event to take place in Hong Kong. The event ran for three seasons before being dropped from the 2019โ€“20 calendar.

The Hong Kong Central Harbourfront Circuit was a temporary street circuit spanning 1.860 km (1.156 mi) across ten turns, making use of existing public roads. Its location placed it against a dramatic backdrop of Hong Kong's skyline, with the racing action passing landmarks including the International Finance Centre, the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, and Hong Kong City Hall.

The circuit presented several challenges. Significant portions of the track were covered with painted road markings and signs, which could become treacherous under wet conditions due to their reduced grip levels. Various tarmac surfaces and adverse camber sections added further difficulty, though drainage was assisted by concrete blocks with holes. The urban geography also created radio communication problems: with over 350 skyscrapers lining Hong Kong's shoreline, drivers reported that the buildings blocked radio signals, forcing them to manage their energy deployment without team assistance during races.

A fundamental regulatory issue ultimately sealed the circuit's fate. The FIA required tracks to be at least 2.2 km (1.4 mi) in length, but the Hong Kong circuit fell short at 1.860 km. Extending the track to the west was ruled out because of the Hong Kong Station rail link on that side of the circuit, which connects the city to its airport. An extension to the east through a tunnel was also deemed too dangerous given the high speeds cars would reach before entering it. Unable to meet the minimum length requirement for the expanded 2019โ€“20 grid, the event was removed from the calendar.

The ePrix made its debut in the 2016โ€“17 Formula E season, establishing Hong Kong as one of the sport's marquee street venues. The race returned for the 2017โ€“18 season before its third and final edition was held during the 2018โ€“19 campaign.

The 2019 Hong Kong ePrix carried added significance as it became the 50th race in Formula E's history since the series began in 2014. In the build-up to the event, the race was widely anticipated to become the first wet race in Formula E history. Drivers explored grip levels during both shakedown sessions and practice on a fully wet track, but the rain did not persist into the race itself, denying the occasion that particular milestone.

Following its removal from the 2019โ€“20 schedule, the Hong Kong ePrix did not return to the Formula E calendar.

Despite its brief run, the Hong Kong ePrix demonstrated Formula E's ambition to bring electric single-seater racing to Asia's most internationally prominent cities. The Central Harbourfront venue offered some of the most visually striking racing footage of the early Formula E era, with skyscrapers and harbour views forming an unmistakable backdrop. Its absence from the calendar from 2019 onwards reflected the practical limitations of staging motorsport on short urban circuits that could not expand to meet evolving FIA standards.
