Within Cotia, Granja Viana occupies an area of 50 km2 and had a population of 35,000 in 2014. It accounts for 70% of Cotia's industry, which includes sectors such as automotive parts, food & beverage, metallurgy, graphic, informatics, serigraphy, chemicals, pottery, horticulture, woods, and plastics. The district is also part of the Transition Towns network, featuring a local community known as "Transition Granja Viana".
The lands now recognized as Granja Viana were once part of the Carapicuyba Farm, which also encompassed areas of present-day Osasco and Embu das Artes. The farm was later fragmented and distributed among numerous individuals, including Niso Vianna, who retained the farmer's name in his property. Other owners included José Giorgi, owner of Fazenda Cabanas (also known as Moinho Velho), and the Junqueira de Aquino family, who owned Fazendinha.
The main center of the farm was renamed Granja Vianna. Its owner, Niso Vianna, was a rotary member and a businessman in the fertilizer industry. He founded the Lar Rotary School, which became the Colégio Rio Branco in 1982, and contributed to the construction of the Santo Antônio Church, to which his wife Vanetty Vianna was devoted. The name "Granja," meaning a place where hens and chickens are bred, originated after Niso acquired more land, imported cattle, and began milk and cheese production. On July 29, 1959, the Sociedade Amigos da Vila de Santo Antônio de Carapicuíba was established, later replaced in 1980 by the Sociedade Amigos do Bairro da Granja Vianna.
Geographer Aziz Ab'Saber, a resident of the neighborhood, criticized its development in 1991. In the latter half of the 20th century, Granja Viana became a dormitory for wealthy families from São Paulo, characterized by luxury condominiums. In the 21st century, it attracted companies and more residents, evolving into a high-density neighborhood with infrastructure challenges.
Granja Viana is home to the Granja Viana International Karting Track. Other notable sites include Cemucam Park, which belongs to the city of São Paulo, and the Zu Lai Buddhist Temple, recognized as the largest Buddhist temple in Latin America.
Several notable individuals have resided in Granja Viana, including geographer Aziz Ab'Saber, singer Eduardo Araújo, statistic professor Vladmir Belitsky, musician Sérgio Dias, musician Marcelo Fromer, actor and TV presenter Alexandre Frota, musician Rita Lee, singer Negra Li, film director Fernando Meirelles, singer Perla, and singer Jair Rodrigues and his children Luciana Mello and Jair Oliveira, along with Jair Oliveira's wife Tania Khalill.
