The Honda Civic Type R TCR is a customer racing car built to the TCR regulations established in 2015, developed and prepared by JAS Motorsport on behalf of Honda. Since its introduction the car has become one of the most widely used and successful platforms in worldwide TCR competition, winning the TCR Model of the Year award โ€” given to the most successful car in the category across the calendar year โ€” in 2019, 2020, and 2024.

The TCR concept, introduced in 2015 by Marcello Lotti, aimed to create a cost-controlled, globally portable touring car formula built around front-wheel-drive production-based cars. Honda, working through its long-standing motorsport development partner JAS Motorsport, recognised the opportunity to field a racing derivative of the Civic Type R, a model already closely associated with performance credentials through its road-going Nurburgring lap records.

The first Civic Type R TCR was derived from the ninth generation Civic FK2 and made its debut in the TCR International Series in 2015. Over the following two seasons, drivers including Gianni Morbidelli, Roberto Colciago, and Attila Tassi raced the car at various stages of the international series. In 2017 Tassi finished runner-up in the TCR International Series standings behind Jean-Karl Vernay, while Colciago finished fifth. In the ADAC TCR Germany series that year, British driver Josh Files won the individual championship in the car.

A substantially revised version of the car arrived for the 2017 season, based on the tenth generation Civic. Despite the road-going Type R using the wider FK8 platform, JAS Motorsport selected the narrower FK7 chassis as better suited to the aerodynamic and handling demands of the TCR formula. The car was fitted with a new multi-link rear suspension, a revised stabiliser, an updated electronic control unit, and an improved roll cage. The package produced 340 horsepower and a maximum torque of 420 Nm. An endurance variant was also offered, with ABS, additional headlights, and cockpit cooling systems added for long-distance events.

Sales of the FK7/FK8-based car opened on 15 December 2017, with twenty-five units available for the 2018 season. The total built had reached 133 by December 2019, reflecting the model's rapid uptake by customer teams across global TCR series.

The third generation Civic Type R TCR, based on the eleventh generation FL5 Civic, made its global racing debut in the TCR UK Touring Car Championship in 2023. The new variant featured a revised aerodynamic package, a new chassis structure, and upgraded braking and transmission systems, updating the platform to remain competitive as the TCR category matured.

The Civic Type R TCR's record across TCR competition has been extensive. Customer teams fielding the car have won titles in series across Europe, Asia, and the Americas, with the 2019, 2020, and 2024 TCR Model of the Year awards reflecting consistent performance at the highest level of the category. The car's success under the TCR rules is also reflected in its presence in the World Touring Car Cup, where JAS-supported Honda entries have featured prominently.

The Honda Civic Type R TCR has been one of the defining cars of the TCR era. By combining a credible front-wheel-drive performance platform with JAS Motorsport's engineering depth and a well-supported global customer programme, Honda established the Civic Type R as a benchmark in the category. Its three Model of the Year awards across different regulatory generations confirm its place among the most consistently successful cars in TCR's short but dense history.
