Abbott began his motorsport career in karting in 1995, winning the HKC Junior TKM Championship in his first year. He progressed to Senior TKM in 1996, finishing 15th overall in the Super 1 National Kart Championships. In 1998, Abbott competed in the Formula 100C Super 1 National Kart Championships, finishing fourth overall, and achieved a second-place position in the European Intercontinental A Championships. He continued in Formula A in 1999, competing in the Super 1 National Kart Championships.
In 2003, Abbott returned to racing after a period of inactivity, competing in a handful of Radical Enduro championship races driving a Radical Prosport, achieving several podium finishes. For 2004, Abbott partnered with Nigel Redwood at Martin Donnelly Racing in the Radical Enduro championship. He secured eight victories and 11 pole positions, the most wins in a single season of Radical Enduro.
Abbott transitioned to UK Oval Racing in 2005, joining the SCSA racing series with Torquespeed Racing. He won the Rookie Championship in his debut season, earning recognition as ‘One to Watch’ by Autosport Magazine and “Driver of the Year” by Roush Racing. He returned to Oval Racing in 2007, finishing as runner-up to Colin White in the series championship.
In 2017, Abbott achieved success in GT racing, winning both the overall and Pro-AM GT3 titles in the Blancpain GT Series Asia driving for GruppeM Racing in a Mercedes-AMG GT GT3. He also competed in selected VLN races in a BMW 235 Cup Car for Walkenhorst Motorsport, achieving a best result of third place. Abbott stood in for injured drivers in the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, achieving a fourth-place class finish at Silverstone with HTP Motorsport and a class win at Barcelona with Barwell Motorsport.
During the opening round of the 2008 British GT Championship at Oulton Park, Abbott was involved in a significant crash. After contact from Peter Snowdon’s Aston Martin, his Ginetta G50 struck the barriers at high speed, flipping multiple times and catching fire. Abbott escaped with minor burns after being trapped in the burning car for 18 seconds, crawling through the roll cage to safety. He returned to racing two weeks later, winning both races at Knockhill.
A multi-car incident at the start of a 2016 British Touring Car Championship race at Snetterton saw Abbott’s Chevrolet Cruze rolled after contact with Mark Howard’s Volkswagen. Abbott suffered concussion, but no other drivers were injured.
Abbott competed in the 2016 Dubai 24 Hour, finishing second in the SP3 class driving a Ginetta G55 GT4 for CWS Racing. In 2020, he participated in the opening round of the European Le Mans Series at Circuit Paul Ricard with JMW Motorsport, finishing fourth in a Ferrari 488 GTE. He also made one-off appearances in Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Benelux, finishing second in the 2013 season.
In 2008, Abbott made a one-off appearance in the Ginetta G50 Cup at Brands Hatch, claiming two pole positions and winning one race despite having no prior experience in the car. In 2012, he entered the Ginetta GT Supercup, finishing sixth overall with two third-place finishes.
