Born on 23 March 1990 in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Alguersuari is the son of motorcycle road racer Jaime Alguersuari, Sr. He began his formula racing career in the Italian Formula 1600 Junior Series in 2005.
Alguersuari won the Italian Formula Renault Winter Series in 2006, and finished as runner-up in the main championship the following year. He moved up to the British Formula Three Championship for 2008, driving for Carlin Motorsport. After winning the final three races of the season, Alguersuari clinched the championship, becoming the youngest title winner in championship history at eighteen years and 203 days. He also deputised for the injured Mark Webber in the 2008 Race of Champions.
In 2009, Alguersuari competed in the Formula Renault 3.5 Series with Carlin, achieving one podium finish before being promoted to Formula One mid-season. He continued to race in FR3.5 alongside his Formula One commitments, winning his first race at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve and finishing sixth overall.
Alguersuari joined Scuderia Toro Rosso in 2009, taking over from Sébastien Bourdais after the German Grand Prix. He became the youngest ever Formula One driver at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix, aged nineteen years and 125 days, breaking the record previously held by Mike Thackwell. He finished fifteenth in that race, one place ahead of teammate Sébastien Buemi. Through the rest of the season, he only finished three races and retired in five. During the Japanese Grand Prix, he had a significant crash while attempting to score his first points.
Toro Rosso retained Alguersuari for the 2010 season, where he scored his first Formula One points with a ninth-placed finish in Malaysia. He also scored a point at his home Grand Prix, and visited the Dominican Republic with the Red Bull team, becoming one of the first drivers to drive a Formula 1 vehicle on the beaches there.
Alguersuari remained with Toro Rosso for the 2011 season, achieving a seventh-place grid start in China. He achieved his best Formula One placing of eighth at the Canadian and European Grands Prix. He qualified a career best 6th at the Belgian Grand Prix but retired after a first corner collision with Bruno Senna. He finished seventh at the Italian Grand Prix, and finished seventh in Korea after passing Nico Rosberg on the final lap.
Following the last race of the 2011 season in Brazil, Alguersuari won the Desafio Internacional das Estrelas karting event. However, on 14 December 2011, Toro Rosso announced that Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Éric Vergne would be the team’s drivers for 2012, replacing Alguersuari and Buemi.
Alguersuari later became part of the Formula E Drivers' Club, and raced for Virgin Racing in the 2014–2015 season, achieving a best finish of fourth at the 2015 Buenos Aires ePrix. He retired from motorsport in October 2015, stating he had “fallen out of love with this girlfriend”. He also participated in karting events in 2021 and 2022, winning a race at Zuera in 2021.
In addition to his racing career, Alguersuari is a DJ under the stage name Squire, and has a recording studio in Barcelona. He headlined the 2010 Barcelona Music Conference and released his debut album, Organic Life, in 2011, which topped the iTunes album chart five days after its release. He released further albums in 2019 and 2021. As Alguersuari stated, “I’m a Formula One driver but I have another thing in my life, and that is music. It's obviously quite strange to see a Formula One driver having another life but this is who I am. I've always said it's important to follow your instincts: I love music and racing doesn't interfere with that. I love to close the door and produce, compose, play music, listen to music. I couldn't live without it, just as I couldn't live without racing.”
