Alexander's photographic career began in 1953 with an expedition to Mexico to cover the Carrera Panamericana road race. From 1954, he covered major European motorsport events, including the 24 Hours of Le Mans in France, and the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio in Italy. During his time in Europe, he also photographed cultural figures for The New York Times and served as the European editor for Car and Driver magazine. His work was featured in Autoweek, Sports Car Illustrated, and Road & Track.
Alexander's black and white images of F1 drivers in action and candid moments were immediately recognizable, infusing his work with feelings of danger and speed. His primary body of motorsport photography was produced across 97 races between 1953 and 1967. Notable photographs include Juan Manuel Fangio in a Maserati 250F at Rheims in 1958, Phil Hill at Monza in 1960, and his acclaimed portrait of Jim Clark after winning the 1962 Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
After his European adventures, Alexander continued with travel photography and filmmaking, as well as corporate commissions from auto manufacturers and lifestyle brands. He also developed an interest in photographing birds and old airplanes.
Jesse Alexander was born in 1929 in Santa Barbara, California, and died on December 15, 2021, in Santa Barbara at the age of 92. In 1974, architect Roland Coate Jr. designed a Brutalist concrete home, known as Mudhouse, for Alexander and his wife, Nancy, in Montecito, California. The largely underground structure was later purchased by comedian Steve Martin.
Alexander was described as soft-spoken, unassuming, and supportive of other photographers. He was a lifelong friend of Dan Gurney and became close with many racing stars. He lived in a chalet in Switzerland during his time in Europe, traveling the continent in a Porsche 356, a VW Microbus, and a Mercedes-Benz 300 SL.
