Broadbent’s early life was marked by the loss of his father, Alan Broadbent, who died by suicide after struggling with depression and alcoholism. In 2014, Broadbent faced personal hardship, losing his job, his home, and experiencing a relationship breakdown due to mental health issues. With limited housing options, he moved into a shed in his mother's garden. He lived and produced digital content from this shed for several years, a circumstance that became a recurring element of his public persona. He remained in the shed until 2021, when he purchased his own home.
Broadbent began his career as a content creator in May 2012, initially uploading raw footage of sim racing games such as rFactor. His channel grew from 10,000 subscribers in 2017 to 100,000 in June 2018. His transition to real-world motorsport occurred in 2021 when he joined Team J2 Praga to compete in the Britcar Endurance Championship. Driving a Praga R1 alongside Jem Hepworth, he made his debut at Silverstone, finishing 6th and 8th in the opening races. The season concluded with a strong performance at Donington Park; paired with new teammate Gordie Mutch, Broadbent swept the round with two victories, securing 5th place in the overall championship standings.
In 2022, Broadbent founded his racing team, Team87, and entered the inaugural Praga Cup. Continuing his partnership with Gordie Mutch, the season saw consistent performance and some technical challenges. The duo was disqualified from a victory due to a turbocharger issue discovered during scrutineering. They recovered to win a subsequent race at Snetterton and claimed four additional victories across the remaining rounds at Silverstone and Donington. This performance secured both the drivers' and teams' championships, marking Broadbent's first titles as both a driver and team owner.
Broadbent then shifted focus to endurance racing at the Nürburgring. In 2023, he joined a Bilstein-organized entry operated by Black Falcon, competing in the VT2 class with a modified BMW 330i alongside Misha Charoudin and Steve Alvarez Brown. For the 2024 season, Broadbent competes in a BMW M4 GT4 in the SP8T class, joined by his previous teammates and 2016 24 Hours of Nürburgring winner Manuel Metzger. The team also announced their participation in the 2024 24 Hours of Nürburgring.
In April 2018, Broadbent was temporarily banned from YouTube during a livestream while viewing Michael Dunlop's Isle of Man TT lap record. The termination was triggered by a copyright claim from Duke Video, though the ban was lifted the following day after the claim was withdrawn.
In the virtual space, Broadbent participated in the 2020 F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix at Bahrain. On the final lap, he battled for 4th place with Formula One driver Lando Norris, securing the position at the final corner following a collision between the two.
Broadbent holds a FIA Bronze racing licence. His record includes a championship title in the 2022 Praga Cup, where he achieved multiple wins and podiums. In the Nürburgring Langstrecken-Serie, his 2023 campaign resulted in points and a ranking in the VT2-R+4WD class. Beyond his own driving, he has raised significant funds for the mental health charity Mind through "The Race for Mental Health," an annual 23-hour iRacing event. The 2020 edition raised over £71,000, while the 2024 event raised over £95,000.
Broadbent's father, Alan, died by suicide when Jimmy was only 13 years old after struggling from alcoholism and depression. In an interview with DriveTribe, Broadbent stated that around 2014, he "lost everything" due to depression and other mental health issues, especially regarding sociability. He lost his job, his house and his fiancée broke up with him. He stated that he had struggled and continues to deal with depression and suicidal thoughts. With nowhere to live, he moved to a shed in his mother's house's garden. He stayed there and also produced content from there. The shed eventually became an inside joke of Broadbent and his YouTube community. In 2021, Broadbent bought his own house and currently lives there. Broadbent also owns 6 cars, a Nissan Skyline GT-R (R32), a MK4 Toyota Supra (A80), a Nissan GT-R (R35), a first-generation Subaru Impreza WRX RA, a Toyota Estima, a modified Mazda MX-5 (NA). & a Ferrari 360. On the 23 January 2025, Jimmy and his partner Annie Avery welcomed their first child together, Guy Lawrence Broadbent.
