Kane began in karting and Formula Ford before moving into Formula Vauxhall and Formula Opel in 1994 and 1995. He won the McLaren Autosport BRDC Award in 1995, one of British motorsport's most prestigious young driver prizes.
Kane drove for Paul Stewart Racing across two British Formula 3 seasons. He claimed six race wins during his time in the series and won the 1997 British Formula Three Championship. The preceding champion was Ralph Firman, and the title would pass to Mario Haberfeld the following year. Kane's 1997 title gave him one of the strongest single-seater credentials of any British driver of his generation.
Kane made four starts in Formula 3000 in 1998 without notable results, and a step to Formula One did not materialise. He moved to the United States to race in Indy Lights in 1999 and 2000 with Team Green. His first Indy Lights season was the more successful: he won two races and finished fourth in series points in 1999. He won once more in 2000 at Detroit, finishing tenth in the standings. He returned to Europe in 2001 and served as test driver for the Arrows Formula One team.
From 2001, Kane raced in sports cars, competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2001 and 2002 in the LMP675 class with the MG-Lola EX257 alongside Anthony Reid and Warren Hughes respectively. Neither entry reached the finish. In 2005 he made his FIA GT debut, and in 2006 and 2007 drove a Spyker in the GT2 class at Le Mans โ both retirements. In 2008 he raced an LMP2 entry for Embassy Racing at Le Mans, which also did not finish.
In 2009 Kane drove a Lola B08/80-Judd for Speedy Racing Team Sebah at Le Mans, finishing twelfth overall and second in the LMP2 class โ his first Le Mans class podium.
The peak of Kane's career came in 2010 with Strakka Racing, co-driving an HPD ARX-01C with Nick Leventis and Danny Watts. At the 24 Hours of Le Mans the trio finished fifth overall and first in LMP2 โ Kane's best Le Mans result.
The same season, at the 1000 km of Hungaroring in the Le Mans Series, Kane and Strakka Racing made history. The HPD ARX-01C took outright pole position and went on to win the race outright โ the first time an LMP2 car had achieved outright victory and taken pole position at a Le Mans Series round. The Hungaroring result remains one of the most significant moments in LMP2 history, demonstrating that the prototype class had developed sufficient pace to defeat the field outright in a major championship race.
Kane continued with Strakka Racing into the FIA World Endurance Championship from 2012. In 2012 and 2013 the team competed in LMP1 with HPD ARX-03a and ARX-03c machinery, finishing seventh in the WEC teams' standings in 2012. The 2013 season included a sixth-place finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
In 2015 and 2016, Strakka returned to LMP2, fielding the Strakka-Dome S103-Nissan in 2015 and a Gibson 015S-Nissan in 2016. The 2016 campaign produced an eighth-place overall finish and fourth in LMP2 class at Le Mans. The 2015 Le Mans resulted in a DNF.
Kane held FIA Platinum driver categorisation until 2017, transitioning to Gold status from 2018 onward.
