Berry met future car owner Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 2008 while competing in the online sim racing league, DMP Online Racing. At the time, he was racing Legend Cars at Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and simultaneously attending Volunteer State Community College while working as a bank teller to fund his racing career.
In 2010, Earnhardt Jr. signed Berry to his JR Motorsports team to compete in late model racing. Berry’s first NASCAR Xfinity Series race came at Iowa Speedway in 2014, driving the No. 5 Chevrolet Camaro for JR Motorsports, where he finished twelfth on the lead lap. He also debuted in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series in 2016, finishing thirteenth at Chicagoland Speedway driving the No. 71 Contreras Motorsports truck.
Berry recorded his first Xfinity Series win at Martinsville in 2021, passing Ty Gibbs for the lead with 28 laps remaining; Berry was the fifth driver to win his maiden race in the series at Martinsville alongside Sam Ard (1982), Brett Bodine (1985), Brad Teague (1987) and Jeff Burton (1990). In 2022, driving for JR Motorsports, Berry scored wins at Dover and Charlotte, qualifying for the playoffs and ultimately finishing fourth in the final points standings.
At the 2015 Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown, Berry spun Lee Pulliam while racing for the lead on the final lap, drawing criticism from Pulliam. In 2019 and 2020, Berry was spun out while leading races at Motor Mile Speedway and Ace Speedway respectively by Bobby McCarty, prompting Berry to intentionally wreck McCarty at Ace Speedway, resulting in a one-race suspension.
On July 3, 2024, Berry signed a multi-year deal with Wood Brothers Racing to drive the No. 21 car, replacing Harrison Burton. He scored his first career Cup Series win at Las Vegas Motor Speedway in 2025, passing and pulling away from Daniel Suárez. This win marked the first time since the 1986 and 1987 seasons that the Wood Brothers won in back-to-back seasons (both won with Kyle Petty). Following a string of last place finishes at Darlington, Gateway, and Bristol, Berry was eliminated from playoff contention at the conclusion of the round of 16.
In 2022, Berry was the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the CARS Tour Window World 125 late model race at North Wilkesboro Speedway, and again in 2023. He also competed in the Xfinity Series at Pocono in 2024, driving the AM Racing No. 15.
Prior to his racing career, Berry worked as a bank teller. He is a former classmate of two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden. During the 2024 Coke Zero Sugar 400, Berry was involved in a major crash, flipping his car on the backstretch, but emerged unharmed. Berry’s car lifted off the ground, overturned, and slid on its roof at high speed for several seconds. The incident prompted discussion about safety updates implemented after a similar crash involving Ryan Preece the previous year.
