Eldora Speedway promoter Earl Baltes launched the Kings Royal in 1984, offering $50,000 to the winner of a 40-lap event — a substantial purse for sprint car racing at the time. The inaugural race was won by Steve Kinser, who went on to lead all drivers with seven Kings Royal victories. From the outset, the event established distinctive victory lane ceremonies: the winner is seated on a throne, crowned with a robe and crown, and handed a scepter, traditions that have become inseparable from the event's identity.
The Kings Royal is classified as a Crown Jewel event in sprint car racing, a designation reserved for the sport's most prestigious and historically significant races. From its inaugural running through 2018, the winner's purse remained at $50,000, before a significant boost to $175,000 in 2019 reflected the event's growing stature.
The Kings Royal expanded over the years from a single-night affair into a multi-day festival. Beginning in 2016, a preliminary full feature called the Joker's Wild was added on Thursday before the Saturday Kings Royal, with an additional event called The Knight Before the Kings Royal held on Friday. This four-day format created a week-long sprint car celebration at Eldora.
The event lost its annual status after the 2020 running was canceled due to the global pandemic. In 2021, two Kings Royal features were run to compensate. Weather complications that year led to both features — originally scheduled on separate nights — being held on the same Saturday, with the Thursday feature running in the afternoon and the Saturday feature in the evening. The Knight Before was ultimately run on Sunday.
The 2021 event also marked the start of a nine-year sanctioning agreement with World Racing Group, promoters of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series.
In October 2023, NASCAR driver Kyle Larson and his brother-in-law Brad Sweet acquired the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions tour from Eldora owner Tony Stewart. Their venture, High Limit Racing, introduced a midweek show at Eldora in the days before the official Kings Royal weekend, running Wednesday and Thursday events under their own format before the World Racing Group's Knight Before (Friday) and Kings Royal (Saturday) events. The Kings Royal itself was reduced to a two-day format — Friday and Saturday only — under this new arrangement.
The High Limit format involves drivers being split into two groups for Wednesday's Double Down Duels, where qualifying times, heat race performances, and feature results are converted into points. The Thursday Joker's Jackpot feature advances the top 12 points earners directly to its A Main, which offered $100,000 to win. In 2025, the Joker's Jackpot was televised on Fox Sports 1.
For the Kings Royal itself, the top two qualifiers are guaranteed starting positions in the A Main, and drivers who finish outside the podium in their heat races are relegated to the B Main. The winner's prize was upgraded to $200,000 in 2025.
Steve Kinser's seven Kings Royal victories stand as the all-time record and are a significant component of his broader legacy as the sport's most decorated champion. Donny Schatz achieved a historic back-to-back victory in 2017, breaking a streak of 33 consecutive years without a repeat winner. Schatz then won again in 2018 to become the first driver to claim three consecutive Kings Royals.
In 2014, Kerry Madsen became the first Australian to win the Kings Royal, underlining the event's international reach and the global nature of sprint car competition at its highest level.
The Kings Royal has served as a defining event in the world of open-wheel dirt racing since its 1984 debut. Its combination of a large and growing purse, distinctive victory lane traditions, and its home at the storied Eldora Speedway have made it the standard against which other sprint car events are measured.
