Swanson was born on March 3, 1988, and developed his racing career entirely within the American open-wheel oval tradition. His path to prominence ran through the USAC national series system, a ladder of pavement and dirt competition that has historically served as a proving ground for drivers aspiring to IndyCar and Indianapolis 500 competition. Swanson ultimately carved out a career as the defining driver of the Silver Crown era rather than ascending to IndyCar, becoming the benchmark against which all Silver Crown competitors are measured.
Swanson made his Silver Crown Series debut in August 2008. He finished fifth in the series standings during his sophomore season, earning Rookie of the Year honors. His first series win came in September 2010 at the Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin State Fairgrounds Racetrack, where he also logged four podiums and six top-five finishes across nine races that season.
Over the following years Swanson built a record of sustained dominance that has no parallel in Silver Crown history. He claimed championships in 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2024 — eight titles in total — surpassing every other driver in the history of USAC national competition. His tally of 45 career Silver Crown wins dwarfs the second-most, Jack Hewitt's 23 wins, placing Swanson in a category entirely his own within the series.
In 2018, Swanson joined Al Unser Sr. as one of only two drivers in history to win four consecutive Hoosier Hundred races at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Speedway in Indianapolis, a mark of longevity and consistency at one of the most storied venues on the Silver Crown calendar.
Swanson has been a regular and highly successful competitor in the Little 500, the pavement sprint car race held at Anderson Speedway in Indiana. He recorded wins in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2026, giving him four victories in the event overall. The Little 500 draws some of the best sprint car talent in the country, and Swanson's multiple victories there underscore his versatility and speed on pavement ovals of varying configurations.
Swanson has not limited himself to Silver Crown competition. He has also won races in USAC National Midget cars, adding to his credentials across the full spectrum of American open-wheel oval racing. In 2021 he became only the second driver — after Mike Bliss in 1993 and 1994 — to win in Midgets, Sprint Cars, and Silver Crown competition at Indianapolis Raceway Park all in the same calendar year, earning the A.J. Foyt Trophy for the achievement.
In 2020 Swanson tested an Indy Pro 2000 car at La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, exploring a potential path toward an Indianapolis 500 ride. Later that year he entered the Indy Pro 2000 race at the Carb Night Classic with Legacy Autosport and won on his series debut — a remarkable performance that demonstrated his adaptability to different car configurations. He has also competed in ARCA Menards Series events, making a one-race appearance at Iowa Speedway in July 2020 with Chad Bryant Racing, an opportunity arranged through Silver Crown director Andy Hillenburg. Additionally, Swanson has raced a supermodified at Oswego Speedway.
In 2022 he won the inaugural season of the Indiana-based 500 Sprint Car Tour.
Kody Swanson's career represents one of the most sustained records of dominance in American open-wheel oval racing outside of IndyCar. His eight USAC national series championships are the most ever recorded by any driver in the organization's history. The margin between his 45 Silver Crown wins and the next driver on the all-time list reflects a competitive consistency across more than a decade that few drivers in any category of motorsport have matched. His successful debut in Indy Pro 2000 raised questions about what he might have achieved had he pursued a more conventional ladder pathway to IndyCar, but his record in Silver Crown, the Little 500, and the broader American oval scene establishes him as one of the most accomplished open-wheel racers of his generation.
