Kylotonn

Kylotonn SARL is a French video game development studio founded in 2006 in Paris, best known for producing officially licensed racing simulations under its KT Racing label. The studio served as the official developer of the World Rally Championship video game series from 2015 to 2023, establishing itself as one of the primary creators of rally simulation titles on console and PC.

Kylotonn's roots trace back to 4X Studio, itself a subsidiary of 4X Technologies founded in 2002. After releasing a single title under that name โ€” the first-person shooter Iron Storm โ€” the studio closed and was later re-founded by Roman Vincent and Yann Tambellini as Kylotonn in 2006. The studio initially developed a variety of titles before honing its focus on motorsport and racing games.

In 2012, Kylotonn developed the Play All technology in collaboration with Wizarbox and Darkworks. Two years later, in 2014, the studio formally launched the KT Racing sub-label to brand its motorsport output. The following year, 2015 saw Kylotonn expand its operations by opening a dedicated facility in Lyon under the name Kylotonn Racing Games, reinforcing its commitment to the racing genre.

Kylotonn's most significant contribution to the sim-racing landscape was its long-running stewardship of the official World Rally Championship video game franchise. Beginning in 2015, the studio released annual WRC titles that gave players access to licensed rally cars, drivers, and stages from the FIA's premier rally series. The games ran across PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC platforms, with later entries extending to next-generation consoles.

In 2017, the studio received industry recognition when WRC 7 won the Ping Award for "Best Sports Game," affirming the quality improvements the team had made over successive annual releases. The WRC partnership continued through to WRC Generations, released in 2022, which marked the final title developed under the Kylotonn arrangement before the license transitioned to Codemasters and EA Sports for WRC 2023 onward.

On 2 October 2018, French publisher Nacon โ€” at the time still operating under the name Bigben Interactive โ€” announced the acquisition of Kylotonn. The relationship between the two companies predated the acquisition by a decade, with Kylotonn and Bigben having collaborated since 2008. Under Nacon's ownership, Kylotonn continued to release its annual WRC titles while also developing other driving games within the publisher's portfolio.

In February 2026, parent company Nacon filed for insolvency after becoming unable to service repayments to bondholders. The financial collapse cascaded to three Nacon subsidiaries, including Kylotonn, which individually filed for insolvency as a result. The French games industry union STJV reported Nacon's intentions to proceed with mass layoffs, though an announcement meeting was subsequently postponed.

In the wake of the insolvency proceedings, a new internal team was formed within Nacon drawing on former Kylotonn personnel, operating under the name Grit Games. This newly constituted team holds the official license to develop WRC games through to 2032, providing continuity for the franchise even as the original studio's future remained uncertain.

Kylotonn's output under the KT Racing label represented nearly a decade of officially licensed rally simulation, bridging a gap in the market that had been left after prior WRC game developers cycled in and out of the license. The studio's annual releases, while often criticised for incremental year-on-year improvements, provided the rally community with accessible, console-native simulations of a discipline that lacks the deep simulation coverage enjoyed by circuit racing. The transition of former Kylotonn staff into Grit Games suggests that much of the institutional knowledge developed during the studio's WRC years will continue to inform future officially licensed rally titles.
