The Lamborghini Huracán GT3 was originally introduced in 2015, developed in collaboration with Dallara and powered by a 5.2-litre naturally aspirated V10 engine producing 388 kW (520 hp). The car was updated to GT3 EVO specification in 2019, with the V10 revised to produce 433 kW (580 hp) and weight reduced marginally to 1,229.4 kg. A further evolution, the GT3 Evo 2, was unveiled in 2022, introducing a new aerodynamic package and intake system. It is the Evo 2 generation that contested the DTM from 2023.
The DTM switched from its Class 1 silhouette formula to GT3 regulations from the 2021 season, opening the series to a far wider range of manufacturers and customer-racing programmes. Lamborghini entered the DTM through SSR Performance and subsequently Grasser Racing Team.
In the 2023 DTM season, the Huracán GT3 Evo 2 ran with SSR Performance, fielded for factory driver Mirko Bortolotti. Lamborghini's DTM presence expanded during the year, with five cars entered across SSR Performance and Grasser Racing Team — up from the two-car effort of previous seasons. Bortolotti achieved five victories across the season, delivering Lamborghini's most successful DTM season to that point, but narrowly missed the drivers' title, finishing second in the final standings.
The 2024 DTM season culminated in Mirko Bortolotti clinching the drivers' championship for SSR Performance, securing the title after finishing second to Luca Engstler in the final round at Hockenheim. The championship was historically significant: it marked Lamborghini's first DTM title and ended a 31-year gap since an Italian driver with an Italian manufacturer had won the championship — a gap stretching back to Larini's 1993 Alfa Romeo 155 V6 TI campaign.
The Huracán GT3 Evo 2 that competed in the DTM uses the naturally aspirated 5.2-litre V10 engine in GT3-restricted form. The car features an aerodynamic package drawing styling cues from the road-going Huracán STO, with revised front intake and rear diffuser elements. It competes against a field of GT3 machinery from manufacturers including Ferrari, Porsche, BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-AMG under the GT3 Balance of Performance framework that governs the contemporary DTM.
The Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO's success in the DTM represents the most prominent factory-supported achievement for the brand in a major European touring and GT series since the marque's entry into circuit racing with the Huracán platform. The 2024 title was particularly celebrated given its historical resonance with Italian motorsport heritage, restoring a connection between Italian manufacturer success in the DTM that had lain dormant since the early 1990s.
