Lamborghini formally announced its entry into both the WEC and IMSA on 17 May 2022. Within weeks, the manufacturer confirmed Ligier as its chassis supplier, making Lamborghini the first LMDh entrant to choose Ligier as a partner. The powertrain combines a 90-degree V8 twin-turbocharged internal combustion engine with a standardized hybrid drivetrain, with components supplied by Williams Advanced Engineering, Bosch, and Xtrac, for a combined maximum output of 671 hp. Iron Lynx, an established GT racing outfit, was named as the entity responsible for running the factory programme in both championships.
The car was publicly revealed on 13 July 2023 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. A shakedown at Vallelunga Circuit followed in early August 2023, with a full test at Imola conducted on 10โ11 August. Mirko Bortolotti, Andrea Caldarelli, and Daniil Kvyat shared driving duties across more than 1,500 km during that test session.
Lamborghini entered a single SC63 for its WEC debut at the 2024 Qatar 1812 km, alongside fellow series newcomers BMW, Alpine, and Isotta Fraschini. The car qualified 18th in class and finished 13th overall, impressing with its reliability if not outright pace. In IMSA, the SC63 debuted at the 2024 12 Hours of Sebring with Andrea Caldarelli, Matteo Cairoli, and Romain Grosjean, finishing 7th overall in a more competitive showing than the WEC opener.
Two SC63s were entered at the 2024 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the second car โ numbered 19 โ run by the same IMSA driver lineup. Both cars completed the race without major incidents, and the full-season No. 63 entry scored Lamborghini's only championship points of the season by finishing 10th overall. At the IMSA Battle on the Bricks at Indianapolis, the SC63 led for nine laps in wet conditions before a drive-through penalty and a subsequent collision with a competitor forced retirement.
At the end of 2024, Lamborghini announced it would not return to the WEC for 2025, citing the two-car Hypercar mandate as financially unviable for a single-entry programme. Iron Lynx simultaneously announced a switch to Mercedes-AMG following a breakdown in communication with Lamborghini. Riley Technologies was confirmed to assist with factory operations going forward.
Lamborghini described 2025 as another development year, again limiting its programme to the Michelin Endurance Cup rounds of the IMSA SportsCar Championship. The season began badly, with retirements at both the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring due to technical failures. The SC63 recovered at the Sahlen's Six Hours at The Glen, finishing 7th overall โ equalling its best IMSA result โ after Grosjean used mixed conditions to lead for 23 laps from 11th on the grid.
In August 2025, Lamborghini announced it would pause the LMDh programme entirely for 2026, withdrawing from IMSA at season's end in favour of focusing on the upcoming Lamborghini Temerario GT3. The manufacturer left the door open to a 2027 return if a suitable factory partner could be found. Before the curtain fell, an Evo update featuring a new rear suspension package was introduced at the Battle on the Bricks; the car finished 4th at the 2025 Petit Le Mans, its best result to date, after mounting a late charge against Cadillac and Aston Martin.
The SC63 programme represents a significant chapter in Lamborghini's motorsport history, marking the brand's first serious factory effort in prototype endurance racing. While competitive pace proved elusive across the car's two seasons, the programme established Lamborghini as a genuine LMDh entrant and laid developmental groundwork that the manufacturer has indicated it intends to build upon after its planned hiatus. The car's association with Iron Lynx also raised the profile of that team in global endurance competition.
