Moraes entered the international spotlight during the 2023 Dakar Rally, driving a Toyota for Overdrive Racing. Partnered with co-driver Timo Gottschalk, Moraes emerged as a surprise frontrunner during the first week of the event, holding third place overall after six stages. Although he reached as high as second in the standings during the rally, he ultimately finished third overall. Following this debut, Moraes received backing from TGR Brazil and joined Toyota in July 2023, subsequently finishing second to Nasser Al-Attiyah at the Baja Aragón.
For the 2024 World Rally-Raid Championship, Moraes joined Toyota Gazoo Racing, partnering with new co-driver Armand Monleón. The season began with a stage 3 victory at the Dakar Rally. Moraes remained in contention for an overall podium until the penultimate day, when a broken damper resulted in a ninth-place finish. His campaign faced further setbacks at the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, where a fire at the end of stage three forced a retirement while he was running third overall. Moraes recovered to take a podium finish in Portugal, beating Carlos Sainz to third place. After a fifth-place finish at the Desafío Ruta 40, which included a stage win, Moraes entered the season-ending Rallye du Maroc as a frontrunner. He won the second stage after a close battle with Al-Attiyah, but a broken throttle pedal the next day hindered his overall result. He concluded the 2024 season third in the W2RC drivers' standings.
The 2025 season marked Moraes's championship success with Toyota Gazoo Racing. Despite a difficult Dakar Rally—which included a suspended disqualification for receiving outside assistance and significant time lost to suspension repairs—Moraes won stages 7 and 12 to finish 15th overall. He followed this with a second-place finish in Abu Dhabi and a third-place finish in South Africa. During the Rally Raid Portugal, Moraes took the overall lead on the third day and successfully defended it against Henk Lategan to secure the rally victory.
Entering the season finale in Morocco as a title contender, Moraes maintained second place overall heading into the final day. By holding his position under pressure and benefiting from a late penalty issued to Nasser Al-Attiyah, Moraes and Monleón were crowned W2RC champions. Following the conclusion of the 2025 season, Moraes announced his departure from Toyota to join Dacia for the 2026 championship, where he will partner with co-driver Dennis Zenz.
During stage five of the 2025 Dakar Rally, Moraes was issued a suspended disqualification. The penalty arose after his co-driver, Armand Monleón, accepted a phone handed to him by an unknown person, violating the event's strict rules against outside assistance. While the incident resulted in a one-hour penalty, its impact on the final standings was overshadowed by mechanical failures in the following stage, where Moraes lost over three hours repairing shock absorbers and suspension components.
Moraes's career is defined by a rapid ascent in the World Rally-Raid Championship. Within three seasons of his debut, he progressed from a third-place newcomer (2023) to a third-place championship finisher (2024) and finally the overall world champion (2025). His record includes multiple stage wins across the Dakar Rally, Desafío Ruta 40, Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, and Rallye du Maroc. Prior to his world championship career, his regional success was established through three Brazilian national titles and two South American Mitsubishi Cup titles.
