The facility was born from a collaboration of 15 Indianapolis-area businessmen and racing professionals who in 1958 each invested $5,000 to develop a 267-acre farm into an auto racing complex. The founding group included Tom Binford, Frank Dickie, Rodger Ward, and Howard Fieber. Their original concept centered on a 15-turn, 2.5-mile road course, but as a hedge against financial risk, planners incorporated a quarter-mile drag strip into the layout's long straightaway. Built with assistance from the National Hot Rod Association, the drag strip was the first element completed, hosting its inaugural event in autumn 1960. The oval was finished a year later, and the complex was named Indianapolis Raceway Park.
The 4,400-foot drag strip is the facility's signature asset and one of the most storied stretches of pavement in American motorsport. Since 1961, it has hosted the NHRA U.S. Nationals โ the oldest and most prestigious event in NHRA drag racing, having moved to the track from Detroit that year. The U.S. Nationals is the only NHRA national event with final eliminations scheduled on a Monday, and it carries the series' largest purse. A special all-star invitational, the Traxxas Nitro Shootout, runs within the event, offering Top Fuel and Funny Car champions a $100,000 winner's prize in a separate showdown purse exceeding $250,000.
The drag strip underwent repaving and ongoing maintenance as part of sustained investment in the facility. In 2005, the track produced a notable moment even outside an NHRA national event weekend, underlining the quality of its prepared surface.
The 0.686-mile paved oval hosts sprint and midget car races, traditionally complementing major events at the nearby Indianapolis Motor Speedway. On Memorial Day weekend the facility runs a USAC Silver Crown, Sprint Car, and Midget Car program serving as an unofficial precursor to the Indianapolis 500 โ an event historically billed as Night Before the 500, later rebranded the Carb Night Classic. The oval hosted NASCAR's Nationwide Series Kroger 200 from 1982 to 2011 before that race migrated to Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The 15-turn road course hosted significant events in its era, including the 1965 victory by rookie Mario Andretti โ his first Indycar win and the first time in modern history that American Indycars raced on a road circuit. That race initiated the Hoosier Grand Prix, which ran as a round of the USAC National Championship Series through 1970. The road course fell out of competitive use after insurance requirements forced closure of the pit lane exit, which ran alongside the drag strip wall. The final SCCA club race was held in 2007, and the surface has deteriorated to a point where renovation would be required before any return to use.
The facility has operated under several names over its history. It opened as Indianapolis Raceway Park and over decades carried the names O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis and Lucas Oil Raceway before the current full designation โ Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park โ was announced in December 2021, following a naming-rights arrangement with Lucas Oil Products.
The drag strip's event calendar beyond the U.S. Nationals has included the NHRA E3 Nationals, Summernationals, and Indy Nationals. NASCAR's Camping World Truck Series returned to the oval in 2022 after an eleven-year absence, starting the NASCAR playoffs as the TSport 200. The Red Bull Global Rallycross Championship visited in 2017, and the Superstar Racing Experience ran there in 2021. The ARCA Menards Series has maintained a regular presence since the departure of NASCAR's Nationwide Series.
Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park holds a rare position in American motorsport: a single site genuinely significant to drag racing, oval racing, and road racing history. Its drag strip has hosted the NHRA's showcase event for more than six decades without interruption, and the oval continues to serve as the gateway weekend to the Indianapolis 500 for short-track disciplines. The combination makes it one of the most multifaceted racing complexes in the United States.
