Mahindra & Mahindra is an Indian automobile manufacturing company headquartered in Mumbai, established in 1945. It is currently the largest manufacturer of tractors in the world by volume, with over 2.1 million tractors sold since its inception. In 2018, it was ranked 17th on a list of top companies in India by Fortune India 500. The company also manufactures SUVs, multi utility vehicles, pickups, and commercial vehicles.

Mahindra & Mahindra was founded on 2 October 1945, in Ludhiana as Mahindra & Mohammed by brothers Kailash Chandra Mahindra and Jagdish Chandra Mahindra, along with Malik Ghulam Muhammad. Anand Mahindra, the present Chairman of Mahindra Group, is the grandson of Jagdish Chandra Mahindra. In 1948, Ghulam Mohammed moved to Pakistan, leading to the company being renamed Mahindra & Mahindra.

Mahindra & Mahindra began assembling the Jeep CJ3 in 1954 and light commercial vehicles in 1965. In 1979, the company began the licensed assembly of Peugeot diesel four-cylinder engines and transmissions. By 1982, a tie-up with Kia Motors was announced to build their four-speed KMT90 transmission and transfer case.

In 1989, Mahindra launched its 4x4 offroad SUV range, consisting of licence-built versions of the Jeep CJ named Brave, Chief, and Baja. These were powered by 2.1-litre Peugeot diesel engines. In 2007, Mahindra entered the two-wheeler industry by taking over Kinetic Motors in India. The company launched the Mahindra Xylo in January 2009, selling over 15,000 units in its first six months.

In 2011, Mahindra launched the XUV500, designed in-house on a global SUV platform. In 2015, Mahindra released sketches of a new compact SUV, the TUV300, launched in September of that year. In October 2020, the second-generation Thar 2020 was launched. In 2021, Mahindra launched the XUV700.

In April 2010, Mahindra and Renault ended their joint venture, with Mahindra buying out Renault’s stake. Renault continued to license and supply key components to Mahindra. In January 2021, Mahindra ended its collaboration with Ford owing to global economic and business conditions caused by the pandemic.

In 1999, Mahindra purchased 100% of Gujarat Tractors from the Government of Gujarat, later renaming it Gromax Agri Equipment Limited. In 2007, M&M acquired Punjab Tractor Limited, becoming the world's largest tractor manufacturer. In 2010, M&M took a 55% stake in the REVA Electric Car Company, later renaming it Mahindra Electric Mobility Ltd after taking 100% ownership. In 2011, Mahindra acquired a majority stake in South Korea's SsangYong Motor, which entered receivership in December 2020. In 2014, Mahindra acquired a 51% controlling stake in Peugeot Motocycles, increasing it to 100% in 2019. In 2015, Mahindra acquired a 33.33% stake in Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery, renaming it Mitsubishi Mahindra Agricultural Machinery. In December 2015, Mahindra acquired a 76.06% stake in Italian car designer Pininfarina. In 2017, Mahindra acquired Turkish tractor and foundry business Erkunt Traktor Sanayii AS for ₹800 crore. In December 2023, Mahindra & Mahindra acquired a 60.01% stake in Emergent Solren Private Limited for ₹288.05 crore.

Mahindra has expanded into aerospace, signing a multi-million dollar deal with Airbus Group in 2018 for the manufacture and supply of metallic components. In April 2025, Airbus signed a contract with Mahindra Aerostructures to produce the main fuselage assembly of the H130 helicopter. Mahindra also maintains a presence in the military vehicle sector, building and assembling vehicles since 1947, including the Mahindra Armored Light Specialist Vehicle and the Mahindra Armored Straton Armoured Personnel Carrier.

Mahindra & Mahindra received the Bombay Chamber Good Corporate Citizen Award for 2006–07 and the Businessworld FICCI-SEDF Corporate Social Responsibility Award in 2007. The Farm Equipment division received the Deming Prize in 2003 and the Japan Quality Medal in 2007. In 2019, Mahindra was named India's Best Brand by Interbrand. Seven of Mahindra’s automotive plants bagged the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance (JIPM) award in 2018. Mahindra Automotive was recognised as ‘One of the Most Trusted Brands of India 2021’ by Team Marksmen and CNBC TV18.
