Nintendo revealed Mario Kart 8 for Wii U at a January 2013 Nintendo Direct and launched it in May 2014. The game was a critical and commercial success โ the fastest-selling Wii U game at launch with over 1.2 million copies in four days โ but its battle mode, which repurposed standard race courses rather than offering dedicated arenas, was widely criticized. Nintendo teased a Switch version alongside the console announcement in October 2016 and revealed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at the Switch presentation in January 2017.
The Deluxe version launched three days after the Nintendo Switch itself, on April 28, 2017. It sold 459,000 copies in the United States on launch day, making it the fastest-selling Mario Kart entry at that point, surpassing Mario Kart Wii's debut by 25,000 units. It surpassed Super Mario Odyssey as the best-selling Switch game in 2019 and overtook Mario Kart Wii as the best-selling Mario Kart game in 2021.
The anti-gravity racing mechanic from Mario Kart 8 โ in which designated track sections allow drivers to race on walls and ceilings, with collisions against bumpers or other racers generating speed boosts โ carries over unchanged. Deluxe introduces the ability to hold two items simultaneously, a change that received widespread praise for adding strategic depth to item management.
New playable characters include the Inklings from Splatoon, Bowser Jr., Dry Bones, and King Boo. Crossover characters from third-party franchises โ including Sonic the Hedgehog, Mega Man, and Pac-Man โ are present as Mii costumes unlocked via amiibo. The Boo item returns, allowing temporary invisibility and the ability to steal opponents' items. Accessibility options introduced in Deluxe include smart steering, which prevents players from leaving the course, and auto-acceleration.
The revamped battle mode was the headline addition. Deluxe provides five new battle-exclusive arenas and three courses adapted from prior entries, replacing the original game's repurposed race circuits. Five battle rulesets are available: Balloon Battle (point-based rather than elimination), Bob-omb Blast, Shine Thief, Coin Runners, and Renegade Roundup, a team mode inspired by cops-and-robbers play in which one side uses Piranha Plants to capture the other. Renegade Roundup was frequently cited as the standout mode. The Feather item, exclusive to battle mode, makes its return from earlier series entries.
In February 2022, Nintendo announced the Booster Course Pass, a paid DLC season pass adding 48 additional race tracks released across six waves between March 2022 and November 2023. Tracks are largely remastered from previous Mario Kart entries. The pass is also included with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription.
Wave 1 released in March 2022 with the Golden Dash Cup and Lucky Cat Cup. Wave 2 in August 2022 added the Turnip and Propeller Cups, including Sky-High Sundae, an original course. Wave 3 in December 2022 introduced the Rock and Moon Cups and added item customization for VS Race and online modes. Wave 4 in March 2023 brought the Fruit and Boomerang Cups along with a new Yoshi's Island original course, and introduced Birdo as the first of eight returning characters. Wave 5 in July 2023 added Petey Piranha, Wiggler, and Kamek. Wave 6 in November 2023 completed the pass with the Acorn and Spiny Cups, added Diddy Kong, Funky Kong, Pauline, and Peachette, and introduced a music player featuring tracks from every course in the game.
Fan reception to the Booster Course Pass was initially mixed, with criticism focused on the lower graphical fidelity of courses ported from Mario Kart Tour and the absence of the main game's anti-gravity features in several early waves. Post-release critical reception varied by wave, with some praised for standout course designs โ notably Waluigi Pinball in Wave 2 and Ninja Hideaway in Wave 1 โ while others received more moderate scores.
Mario Kart 8 received broadly positive reviews on Wii U. Deluxe received near-universal acclaim, with reviewers consistently calling it the definitive version of the game and one of the best Mario Kart entries. The revamped battle mode was singled out as the correction the original needed. Reviewers praised the visual presentation, the consistent 60 frames per second performance, and the soundtrack โ including a live-band rendition of the Super Mario Kart theme.
As of December 31, 2024, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 67.35 million units on Nintendo Switch, making it one of the best-selling video games of all time. Combined with 8.46 million copies of the Wii U original, total series sales for Mario Kart 8 across both platforms exceeded 79 million. A sequel, Mario Kart World, was released as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025.
A notable cultural moment during the Wii U era was the Luigi death stare, an internet meme arising from Luigi's automatic facial expression when attacking or overtaking rivals, giving them a disapproving sideways glare. The meme spread widely in viral videos and animated GIFs in June 2014, and Nintendo referenced it during their E3 2014 digital event.
