The MP4-20 was designed in response to the failure of the MP4-18 and MP4-19, with a focus on meeting the revised aerodynamics and suspension requirements of the 2005 regulations. The car featured a raised front wing, smaller diffuser, and rear wing moved further forward, as well as a shorter wheelbase to maximize the performance of the Michelin tires. The design team, led by Adrian Newey, aimed to create a car that could compete with the dominant teams of the time, while also addressing the reliability issues that had plagued the previous models.
The MP4-20 featured a number of distinctive innovations, including 'horn' wings fitted to the bodywork behind the overhead air intake, which were designed to claw back as much downforce as possible lost through the FIA's rule changes. The car also had a wide, flat nose design, which was initially trialled on the MP4-19 at the 2004 Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes engine, designed by Mario Illien, was the most powerful in F1 that year, but suffered from reliability problems that would ultimately cost the team the championship.
The car was fast but unreliable in testing, and while Kimi Räikkönen was able to get the best out of the car in the early part of the season, Juan Pablo Montoya initially struggled to get to grips with the setup and unusual driving technique the car required. Montoya was not helped by an off-track injury that put him out for two races early in the year, and his stand-ins, Pedro de la Rosa and Alexander Wurz, finished fifth and third respectively in those races. Montoya eventually settled with the car and scored three wins and several podiums. Räikkönen won seven races and was in a position to win at least three others, but the car's unreliability cost him the title.
The MP4-20 did not trigger any significant rule changes, but the tuned J-damper introduced by McLaren on the car at the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix was noted as one of the drawings taken to Renault when Phil Mackereth left McLaren, as part of the 2007 Formula One espionage controversy.
The MP4-20 is notable for being the last McLaren car to be powered by Mercedes-Benz under the Ilmor partnership since the 1995 season. The car's design and performance also made it a favorite among drivers, with Kimi Räikkönen declaring it his favorite F1 car to drive in his career. The MP4-20's influence can be seen in subsequent McLaren designs, which built upon the innovations and lessons learned from the 2005 season.
In an interview, Räikkönen reflected on the MP4-20, highlighting its speed and handling, and the challenges he faced in getting the best out of the car. The MP4-20 remains an important part of McLaren's history, and its legacy continues to be felt in the world of Formula One.
