He won the 2004 Nordic ICA Junior Championship and the following year secured both Nordic and European titles in the ICA Junior class. For 2006 he graduated to Formula A competition, finishing second in the Formula A World Championship and winning the German Kart Championship on two occasions, as well as taking victory in the Macau International Kart Grand Prix Formula A. He repeated as German Kart Champion in 2007 and also won the KF1 South Garda Winter Cup that year.
Christensen made his open-wheel racing debut in the 2008 Formula BMW Europe season at Barcelona, where a support event for the Spanish Grand Prix provided a dramatic introduction when he flipped his car in an incident. He recovered to finish sixth overall and claimed the top rookie in the rookie standings. Moving to Mücke Motorsport for 2009, Christensen entered the season as a strong championship contender and won the opening race. He ultimately finished fourth in the standings, however, after losing results from five races including three victories following a rejected FIA appeal over a technical regulations breach by his team.

He was elevated to factory driver status in 2014 and was placed in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship alongside Patrick Long in the GTLM class. That season he won the 12 Hours of Sebring and the North American Endurance Cup.
In 2015, Christensen moved to the FIA World Endurance Championship, partnering Richard Lietz in the Manthey Racing GTE-Pro entry. The season ended with Porsche winning the manufacturers championship, and Christensen finishing fourth in the drivers standings.
In the 2018-2019 FIA World Endurance Championship, Christensen was part of the Porsche effort that succeeded in winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the sport's most celebrated endurance event. The victory represented the culmination of years of development within the Porsche factory programme.
For the 2023 WEC season, Christensen was named in the Porsche Penske Motorsport lineup for the new Hypercar class, partnering Dane Cameron and Frederic Makowiecki in the Porsche 963. He continued with the same programme for 2024, sharing the car with Makowiecki and Matt Campbell across the WEC calendar.
