Dunlop is part of one of motorsport's most storied dynasties. He is the son of the late Robert Dunlop, a celebrated road racer in his own right, and the brother of the late William Dunlop, who was killed during a practice session at the Skerries 100 in July 2018. His uncle, the late Joey Dunlop, is widely regarded as the greatest road racer in history and held the TT wins record until Michael surpassed it. The family's story was documented in the 2014 film Road, narrated by Liam Neeson. Dunlop also published his autobiography, Road Racer: It's in My Blood, in 2017.
Dunlop made his TT debut in 2007 and claimed his first victory two years later in the second Supersport race in 2009 on a Yamaha. Over the following years he built his record across all major TT classes โ Superbike, Supersport, Superstock, and Supertwin โ establishing himself as the dominant force at the event.
In 2016, he became the first rider to complete a lap of the Mountain Course in under 17 minutes, setting a new outright lap record at 133.962 mph during the Senior TT. The record stood until 2018, when Peter Hickman posted 135.452 mph.
In 2024, Dunlop surpassed Joey Dunlop's long-standing record of 26 TT wins, becoming the most successful rider in the event's history. A left-bend at the 27th mile from the startline was subsequently named MD's in recognition of his 27th win. He continued in 2025, claiming his 33rd TT victory in the second Supertwin race and setting a new Supertwin class lap record at 123.056 mph.
In 2026, Dunlop extended his record further. He won the first Supersport race by 24.470 seconds from Dean Harrison โ his ninth successive win in that class โ and added victories in Supersport race two and Sportbike race one, the latter with a new lap record of 124.350 mph, bringing his total to 36. He also completed a tribute lap aboard a replica of Joey Dunlop's 2000 Formula 1-winning Honda SP1.
Dunlop secured his first North West 200 victory in 2008 in the 250cc race on a Honda, a win that came two days after the death of his father Robert Dunlop during practice for the same event and the day before his funeral. The circumstances made it one of the most emotionally charged victories in road racing history.
He went on to claim further wins at the North West 200 across multiple years, including Superstock and Superbike races on BMW in 2014 and a Superbike win in 2016 in which he set a new Superbike lap record of 123.207 mph. After a nine-year winless spell at the event, he returned to form in 2025 with victories in the Supersport, Superstock, and Superbike races โ his first wins on Ducati machinery. In 2026, he took a ninth North West 200 victory in a twice red-flagged Supersport race on his Ducati.
Dunlop has been a regular frontrunner at the Southern 100, where he claimed the Solo Championship title in 2011. By 2025 his win total at the event had reached 26, including a record-breaking Supersport victory aboard a Milwaukee Ducati as the first rider to win a 600cc race at the Southern 100 at over 112 mph.
At the Cookstown 100, he has taken multiple victories across Superbike, Supersport, and Open categories. In 2026 he recorded four wins at the meeting, including a new outright lap record of 92.1 mph.
At the Tandragee 100, he set a new absolute lap record of 111.584 mph in 2025, becoming the first rider to record a 111 mph lap at the venue.
He has also competed at the Daytona 200, finishing 11th on his debut in 2021 and 9th in 2025 aboard a Milwaukee Ducati Panigale V2.
Michael Dunlop's record at the Isle of Man TT โ 36 wins, 55 podiums โ places him beyond comparison with any other competitor in the event's history. He has maintained his dominance across successive eras of machinery, from Yamaha and Honda through to BMW and Ducati, adapting to different manufacturers while consistently extracting race-winning performance at the most demanding circuits in the world. His career, conducted in the shadow of profound personal loss and within the most hazardous form of motorsport, represents one of the most remarkable sustained achievements in professional motorcycle racing.
