Dunlop belongs to one of motorsport's most celebrated road-racing dynasties. He is the son of the late Robert Dunlop, brother of the late William Dunlop, and nephew of the late Joey Dunlop. The family's road-racing legacy was documented in the 2014 documentary Road, narrated by Liam Neeson, in which Michael featured prominently. He later published his autobiography Road Racer: It's in My Blood in 2017.
The tragedy that has shadowed his career began early. Dunlop secured his first North West 200 victory in 2008, winning the 250cc race on a Honda โ two days after the death of his father Robert during practice for that same event, and the day before his funeral.
Dunlop made his Isle of Man TT debut in 2007 and claimed his first victory in 2009, winning the second Supersport race on a Yamaha. Over the following decade and a half he built a record of sustained dominance unmatched in the event's long history.
In 2016 he became the first rider to complete a lap of the Mountain Course in under 17 minutes, setting a new outright lap record of 16 minutes 53.929 seconds at an average speed of 133.962 mph during the Senior TT. That benchmark stood until 2018 when Peter Hickman posted 135.452 mph.
In 2024 Dunlop surpassed Joey Dunlop's long-standing record of 26 TT wins, cementing his position as the event's most decorated competitor. A left-bend at the 27th mile from the startline was subsequently named MD's in acknowledgment of his 27th win that year.
In 2025 he extended his tally further, claiming his 33rd TT victory in the second Supertwin race and setting a new class lap record at an average speed of 123.056 mph, while pushing his podium total to 51.
In 2026 he added three more wins โ the first and second Supersport races and the first Sportbike race โ bringing his total to 36 TT victories. His first Supersport win that year came with a winning margin of 24.470 seconds over Dean Harrison, marking his ninth successive victory in the class. He also participated in a tribute lap aboard a replica of his uncle Joey Dunlop's 2000 Formula 1-winning Honda SP1.
Dunlop has accumulated nine victories at the North West 200. After his 2008 breakthrough, he added wins in the Superstock and Superbike Race 2 events in 2014, the Superbike race in 2016 โ where he set a new lap record of 123.207 mph โ and three wins in 2025 (Supersport, Superstock, and Superbike) on Ducati machinery, his first wins at the meeting in nine years. In 2026 he claimed a ninth victory in a twice red-flagged Supersport race on a Ducati V2.
Dunlop has been a front-runner at the Southern 100 for more than a decade, winning the Solo Championship in 2011 on PBM Kawasaki machinery. By 2025 he had reached 26 victories at the event, claiming a record-breaking Supersport win that year to become the first rider to win a 600cc race there at over 112 mph.
At the Tandragee 100 he has achieved 13 race victories, including a 2025 return after a twelve-year absence in which he set an absolute lap record of 111.584 mph. At the Cookstown 100 he has won across Superbike, Supersport, and Open classes, recording four wins at the 2026 meeting alone and setting a new outright lap record of 92.1 mph. He also raced at the Daytona 200 in 2021 (11th) and 2025 (9th on Ducati).
Michael Dunlop's record at the Isle of Man TT โ built in the shadow of profound personal loss and continued at a circuit where the dangers are ever-present โ places him in a category of his own in road racing history. Three times named Irish Motorcyclist of the Year, his career encompasses victories for manufacturers including Yamaha, Honda, BMW, and Ducati, across the full range of road-race categories. His appointment as MBE in 2025 recognized a body of achievement that has redefined what is possible at the Isle of Man TT.
