Bathurst is a 174-metre vertical-elevation loop carved out of the side of Mount Panorama itself β a hill that rises out of the agricultural plain west of Bathurst township. From the startβfinish line on Pit Straight (the south-eastern flat), the lap climbs through Mountain Straight, ascends Reid Park and Mc Phillamy Park, traverses the narrow ridgetop section known simply as The Top, and then plunges down The Dipper, The Esses and Forrest's Elbow to Conrod Straight β the 1.9-kilometre back straight that is one of the longest in international motorsport. The lap closes with The Chase (a 1987-built chicane added to bleed Conrod Straight's terminal speed) and the final left-hander onto Pit Straight.
It is a circuit defined by its terrain: a narrow, undulating, hugely cambered, walled-on-both-sides bobsleigh run that turns the cars into the hillside and reads the driver's nerve through the steering wheel. There is no run-off on most of the lap. The walls are concrete; the kerbs are paint; the surface is public bitumen renewed once a year.
The Bathurst city council laid out a "scenic motor drive" around Mount Panorama in 1938 with a dual mandate: civic recreation in fifty-one weeks of the year, motor racing in one. The first race was the 1938 Australian Tourist Trophy, won by Peter Whitehead in an ERA. From the outset, the circuit's appeal was the sense β accurate β that the road was not built for racing but pressed into service by it. Bathurst was a road first, a circuit second, and that order has never been reversed.
The race that made Bathurst internationally significant is the Bathurst 1000, currently the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000, contested for production-derived touring cars over 1,000 kilometres (161 laps of the modern circuit). It began life as the 1963 Armstrong 500 at Phillip Island, moved to Bathurst in 1963 when Phillip Island's surface failed, and has been held annually at Mount Panorama ever since.
The race has been won by Peter Brock nine times β the all-time record, earning him the nickname "King of the Mountain". His 1979 lap-record win, a margin of six laps over second place, is regarded as one of the most dominant performances in Australian motorsport history. Allan Moffat, Dick Johnson, Mark Skaife, Craig Lowndes, and Jamie Whincup all carry the Bathurst legend forward into the modern V8 / Supercars era.
Since 2007 the circuit has also hosted the Bathurst 12 Hour, an endurance race contested by GT3 machinery that has become one of the world's premier sports car events. Manufacturers from BMW, Mercedes-AMG, Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bentley, McLaren, Aston Martin and Nissan have contested it; the race has produced upsets (smaller teams winning over factory efforts), photo finishes (the Whincup/van Gisbergen Maranello vs the Triple-Eight Mercedes in 2015 remains canonical), and has elevated Bathurst's international profile during a window when the V8 Supercars audience is overwhelmingly Australian.
Pit Straight β flat, the only part of the circuit drivers fully relax on.
Hell Corner (Turn 1) β a tight left, brake hard from terminal velocity, the speed scrubbed off in a single steep deceleration.
Mountain Straight β the climb begins, the road narrowing, cars heavy on the rear tyres.
Griffins Bend / The Cutting β a left then right onto the most precipitous part of the climb, into a sandstone cutting where the camber tips the car into the inside.
Reid Park / McPhillamy Park β the high plateau, briefly faster.
Skyline β the crest at the top of the mountain.
The Dipper β the legendary "dipper" β a sharp left-hand dive over a crest that depresses the suspension to the bumpstops. A wrong line costs the front splitter.
The Esses β a downhill snake.
Forrest's Elbow β a tight left that levels onto Conrod Straight.
Conrod Straight β 1.9 km flat-out, the cars approach 300+ km/h.
The Chase β the 1987 chicane mid-Conrod, bleeding the terminal speed before the final braking zone.
Murray's Corner β the last left onto Pit Straight.
Mount Panorama has been remarkably faithful to its 1938 outline. The two significant changes are:
1987 β The Chase was added to Conrod Straight to manage modern car terminal speed, after a series of Conrod incidents involving aero-failure at over 300 km/h. The chicane was extensively redesigned in 2010.
2003 β Minor reprofiling of The Esses and modest run-off additions at Forrest's Elbow.
The circuit also operates as a public road, which means it cannot be aggressively modernised the way a permanent track might be. This constraint is what preserves Bathurst's character β the chance of further runoff additions remains contested between motorsport safety advocates and the Bathurst civic constituency.
Mount Panorama is in iRacing (highly accurate laser scan), ACC (2020 Intercontinental DLC), AMS2 (DLC), and has been the subject of numerous Assetto Corsa community mods of varying quality. LMU does not include it. The circuit's narrow corridors, concrete walls and short braking zones make it one of the most-demanded sim venues β and one of the most difficult to drive convincingly in any sim, because the slightest aero-balance mismatch is punished within a few corners.
The annual Bathurst pilgrimage β the camping, the open-engine soundtrack, the over-700,000 cumulative TV viewers in a country of 26 million β has made Mount Panorama a national institution in Australia in a way that no individual race elsewhere in the southern hemisphere has matched. The phrase "King of the Mountain" has entered the Australian sporting lexicon. The Holden vs Ford rivalry, fought primarily on this circuit for fifty years before Holden's 2020 brand discontinuation, defined a generation of Australian fans.
